Schroder was born in Braunschweig, Germany in 1994. His late father was German and his mother is Gambian. Schroder has two brothers and two sisters. As a youngster, Schroder played soccer and skateboarded before switching to basketball at age 11. Before the NBA, Schroder played three seasons at various levels of the German Basketball League. He declared for the 2013 NBA Draft a few months before his 20th birthday. Sometimes known as Dennis "The Menace", his favorite food is chicken alfredo. Follow him on Twitter and Instagram (@DennisMike93). Before his days in the NBA, Schroder played three seasons of professional basketball in Germany. He started in 2010, playing for SG Braunshweig, the second-tier farm team for Phantoms Braunschweig. He averaged 7.8 points and 2.1 assists per game as a 17-year-old. In his second season, he provided a major boost in production. Schroder averaged 17.8 points and 6.7 assists, earning the trust of the parent club. That same 2011-12 season, he also played 30 games for Phantoms Braunschweig, which he'd go on to play exclusively for in 2012-13. Over 32 contests, he averaged 12 points, 3.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds over 25 minutes of run. Schroder earned the German League's Most Improved Player and Best Young German Player awards at season's end.
