Earl Monroe (1944): “Earl the Pearl” is considered one of the greatest basketball players ever. Drafted with the second pick in the 1967 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets, Monroe earned Rookie of the Year and made two All-Star appearances in his five years in Baltimore. He was traded to the New York Knicks in 1971 and spent his final nine seasons in New York. Monroe made another two All-Star appearances for the Knicks before retiring in 1980. The flashy guard averaged 18.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.0 steals throughout his 13-year career, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990.
Reggie Lewis (1965): Lewis was the 22nd pick in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics and had a breakout sophomore season, averaging 18.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals. Sensational seasons became commonplace for Lewis, including earning an All-Star selection in 1991. He averaged 17.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals throughout his six-year career. Lewis died at the age of 27 after suffering a fatal heart attack in 1993.
