“Welcome to Our Yard” celebrates the unity among HBCU students while showcasing the diverse facets of our blackness. As an artist, I am committed to representing and celebrating black people through my work, recognizing the non-monolithic nature of our experiences. This artwork invites viewers to explore and connect with each character, encouraging conversations that reflect the rich diversity within the broader context of blackness. Through this piece, I aim to spotlight the vibrant and varied stories of the students on our campus.

Meet The Artist

Sopuruchi Ndubuisi is a senior art and design major at Fisk University. Growing up in Nigeria, she was surrounded by a vibrant artistic environment that influenced her from a young age. Through this immersive upbringing, she developed a profound appreciation for creativity and diverse perspectives.

As an artist, Sopuruchi is devoted to challenging stereotypes and advocating for representation through her artwork. With a commitment to showcasing the multifaceted nature of black experiences, she has gained experience through internships and partnerships with multiple clients, honing her creativity and skills through collaboration. Sopuruchi’s artistic vision goes beyond conventional boundaries; through her work, she seeks to bridge cultures and amplify underrepresented voices.
