NBA All-Star x HBCU Student Showcase: Aliyah Chevalier

Aliyah Chevalier is a senior Studio Art major at the University of the District of Columbia.

An Exchange with Substance

In this collage, two people are engulfed in the moment. They are amused and entertained by the dialogue, as they exchange knowledge and ignite each other’s enthusiasm for growth. They symbolize utilizing resources, self-education, mutual challenges, questioning everything, and embracing the ability to agree to disagree. It is a space where ideas are valued and constantly challenged. This is my vision of what campus life should embody. I wish my generation would limit their smartphone usage to engage in stimulating conversations and independent thought, instead of simply accepting what social media tells us to think.

Meet The Artist

Aliyah Chevalier’s art is influenced by her connections to the Washington, D.C. area and Jamaica, where she frequently visits family. Drawing from her life experiences and cultural background, she envisions a world where these two environments collide. Her education at Duke Ellington School of the Arts and the University of the District of Columbia allowed her to explore various art forms, using shapes, lines, and vibrant colors to capture the beauty and struggles of humanity. Music also plays a significant role in her artistic expression, as a DJ she lets its rhythm influence her artistic style.

Through her recent project, RastaBaby Designs, Aliyah combines her studies in studio art with clothing design, creating unconventional and thought-provoking designs that challenge norms. Her vision is to push the boundaries of normality, opening minds and sparking meaningful conversations through her art.
