2021 Summer League MVP Louis King’s 20 points helped lead the Phoenix Suns to a 104-84 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA 2K23 Summer League on Friday night at Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
The Suns shot 50.6% overall and were hot right from the jump, forging a 24-17 lead over the Lakers during the first 10 minutes. Phoenix matched its first quarter scoring total in the second period while Los Angeles discovered its stroke on the way to a 25-point haul, but that still left the Suns with a six-point halftime lead. King and company then sealed the game during a third quarter in which they outscored the Lakers 33-21. The Lakers shot only 34.6% and were outpaced in rebounds 51-37.
King added four rebounds, two assists and one block to his team-high scoring tally. Ish Wainwright provided 17 points, three assists, one rebound and one steal. Tyson Carter and Duop Reath had matching 11-point tallies while pulling down three and seven rebounds, respectively. Olivier Sarr finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, one assist and one block. McKinley Wright IV matched Sarr’s scoring and also recorded nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block.
Scotty Pippen Jr. paced the Lakers with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Paris Bass delivered 14 points and two rebounds. Cole Swider supplied 11 points, four boards and one assist. Mason Jones turned in 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Rookie second-round pick Max Christie registered nine points, eight rebounds and one assist.
The two teams return to the floor Sunday, with the Suns taking on the Washington Wizards on Sunday afternoon and the Lakers tangling with the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday night.
