DeVos family members contributed a total of $3 million to 30 local organizations over past two seasons in recognition of family’s first 30 years as ‘caretakers’ of Orlando Magic franchise

ORLANDO – Thirty years ago, shortly after acquiring the Orlando Magic franchise, Rich DeVos had one request – please don’t call him the owner. “The real stake in the team is the community and people who are the fans who come to the games,” DeVos said at the time. “We’re just the caretakers of your team and we’ll try to do a good job for you.”

Following these first three decades as caretakers, DeVos family members went a step further – formally thanking the community and fans through a seasons-long giving pledge called “30 grants for 30 years”. The effort contributed a total of $3 million to 30 area nonprofit organizations over the past 18 months, investing in people and projects impacting youth, essential needs for families, and community enrichment across Central Florida.

As part of the 30&nbsp;grants&nbsp;initiative, each selected nonprofit was honored at its very own Magic game during the 2021-22 or 2022-23 season. &nbsp;Representatives were recognized during the game, featured on Magic digital&nbsp;platforms&nbsp;and given the chance to share their story directly with fans of the franchise.

“I would love the DeVos family to know how grateful we are for the support here in Central Florida,” said Heather Wilkie, Executive Director of Zebra Coalition, a local nonprofit providing housing and support services for LGBTQ+ youth. “The programming we offer is so specialized and so important for our kids. They often have a lot of challenges, both socially and (with) their families. So, for us to be able to provide support from a mental health counseling perspective and a social perspective at a young age is so important for their growth. We really appreciate all the support, and you are truly making an impact here in Central Florida.”

Orlando's NBA franchise since 1989, the Magic's mission is to be world champions on and off the court, delivering legendary moments every step of the way. ORLANDO - It’s critical for children to have positive role models in their lives. When they do, they are more likely to excel in school, develop career aspirations, and build healthy relationships.&nbsp;

As the late Rich DeVos famously shared, “Few things in the world are more powerful than a&nbsp;positive push. A smile. A world of optimism and hope. A 'you can do it' when things are tough.”

With that in mind, organizations such as the Foundation for Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), the Education Foundation of Osceola County, and the Foundation for Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) continue to intentionally grow and enhance their youth mentoring programs to accelerate student success. By providing mentorship, advocacy, skills workshops and support, these programs break the cycle of poverty by empowering students with the chance to pursue post-secondary education and prepare for a career instead of a job.

Now, thanks to a $45,000 donation from the DeVos Family Foundation, as part of their 30 Grants for 30 Years Initiative, these three organizations will be able to connect more students with mentors, enhancing public education for students, teachers, and families; and creating scholarship opportunities for graduates.&nbsp;

“I thought that was a special way to show how much they care about a community that they have supported for 30 years, providing role models for our students and all of our kids,” said Deborah Pedraza, the executive director at Foundation for OCPS. “They have enriched the community in so many ways, and this additional investment in our kids right here in our community, is very, very special. I’m very grateful for it.”&nbsp;

Throughout Central Florida, there is an ongoing need for the support offered by the foundations in all three counties. In Seminole County alone, there are nearly 2,000 homeless students, with almost half of their students participating in free and reduced lunch programs.&nbsp;

“We need to make sure that the kids have what they need to be successful in class, they have the supplies they need, they have supportive adults in their lives, and they have access to great teachers and resources,” said Jean Vansmith, the executive director at Foundation for SCPS.&nbsp;

Along with ensuring those resources, all three of the foundations look to provide programs for students with intentional strategies aimed at closing the achievement gap and uncovering opportunities that will lead to college, career, and life readiness.&nbsp;

“This grant is very impactful in that it will change hundreds of lives for students here in Osceola County,” said Kerry Avery, executive director at Education Foundation Osceola County.&nbsp;

Staff members at all three foundations get great joy out of&nbsp;watching a child blossom while finding their voice and building their confidence. Through all of their programs, which are designed to either accelerate student achievement, support teachers, and prepare youth for their future careers, they have paved the way for students to reach their goals in and out of the classroom.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s magical,” Pedraza said. “Just watching them become who they are going to be as a person. It’s hard to describe. But even in my own volunteering, just watching the light bulbs go off in a child’s eye when they finally grasp a concept, or they finally do it themselves. Anyone who is a favorite aunt, a favorite uncle, or a parent knows that feeling. But, it’s even more powerful when you are able to do it for a child who’s not your own. These programs that allow people to mentor and have that connection with the kids create that magic.”&nbsp;

ORLANDO - Where do LGBTQ+ youth go when they are unwelcomed in their family homes and have no place to go? Unfortunately, many end up on the streets where they are at risk of being victimized and harassed. This situation regrettably plays out all too often, as LGBTQ+ young people are more than twice as likely to experience homelessness than non-LGBTQ youth.

Zebra Coalition in Orlando has been providing housing and support services for LGBTQ+ youth since 2010. The nonprofit supports individuals ages 13–24 through various programs and services – including mental health counseling, housing, community and leadership, youth meetups, education funds and more.

The organization has served more than 500 youth, and the community need for these services has only grown in recent years – increasing by 30 percent since March 2020.

Now, through a $30,000 donation from the DeVos Family Foundation, even more resources, support services, and counselor hours will be available for those who enter Zebra’s doors.&nbsp;Each program and goal are proactively designed and ultimately implemented with a clear vision of how outcomes will validate planned activities to support and inspire LGBTQ+ youth who are engaged with Zebra Coalition, with a goal of providing each individual with the tools necessary to become healthy, engaged, and self-sufficient individuals.

ORLANDO – With nearly 150 parks, gardens, recreation areas, neighborhood centers, and playgrounds within its radius, Orlando certainly lives up to its nickname of the City Beautiful.

Each of these locations spread throughout the city assist in providing Central Florida children with unique recreational opportunities.

For kids residing in the Parramore District of Orlando, the John H. Jackson Neighborhood Center fits that bill.

Equipped with basketball courts, a fitness center, futsal court, kitchen, playground, softball field, swimming pool, and tennis courts, the center features an expansive list of health and wellness offerings. In addition, its computer lab, game room, multi-purpose room, recording studio, and virtual game room provide residents with a number of educational and entertainment resources.

Now, as a result of a $150,000 donation from the DeVos Family Foundation through its 30 Grants for 30 Years Initiative, the John H. Jackson Neighborhood Center will be able to revitalize its playground – originally built with the Orlando Magic as part of a KABOOM! project in 2009 – to even further expand its community-driven portfolio to neighbors.

“That’s what the DeVos commitment has done throughout Central Florida. They came, put their stake in the ground, and they keep expanding and making this a better place for all,” said Orlando District 5 Commissioner Regina Hill.

What makes the project even more special is that residents have led the ideation for additions to the center. Approximately 30 local children from various age groups were able to look through project options and voice their opinion on what additions would be most meaningful.

“When a child feels like they have a say or can help design a project that’s built for them, they seem to take care of it a whole lot more,” Hill shared. “To give these children an opportunity to tell us what they like and what’s best for them, and then to implement it, I think it’s going to be a dream come true when we bring it to fruition.”

As a lifelong Parramore resident, this impact hits close to home for Hill, explaining, “When we start talking about legacy building, when we start talking about the trickle-down effect in a positive manner and major impact, that’s what’s happening because of the Orlando Magic and the DeVos Family Foundation. Not just building buildings and building teams but building communities and (supporting) the people that live (here).”

The late Rich DeVos, who bought the Magic in 1991, was often referred to as a chief cheerleader, emanating his compassion for others. That mantra is shared by his entire family, who now continue his legacy with the same philanthropic mindset.  

“That was my father. When we first got involved with the team and acquired the franchise, that’s the one thing he said: ‘Don’t call us owners. We’re not owners. We’re caretakers,’” Magic Chairman Dan DeVos explained. “The real stakeholders are the fans and community of Central Florida.” 

ORLANDO - Hearing domestic abuse victims share their stories is a big part of the healing process for others recovering from their own trauma.&nbsp;

Kristen Nicole Adams, a mother of three, knows firsthand how powerful and influential that can be. After arriving at Harbor House of Central Florida in 2019, she heard fellow domestic abuse survivors share details about some of their most distressing moments, which made her realize she was not alone.

Her mentality following that group talk session was, “if they can do it, I can do it,” and that positive outlook has stayed with her ever since. And this is really what Harbor House is trying to capture – continually innovating ways to foster a safer community.

Harbor House’s mission is to prevent and eliminate domestic abuse in Central Florida by providing critical life-saving services to survivors, implementing and advancing best practices, and educating and engaging the community in a united front.

“To hear other survivors speak about their stories gave me courage and hope that it was possible,” she said.&nbsp;

Nearly three years since first walking through Harbor House’s doors, Adams is thriving. She’s fully self-sufficient, has had numerous promotions at her job, was recently pre-approved for her first home mortgage, and her children are healthy and happy.&nbsp;

Adams also is now an advocate at Harbor House herself, helping other domestic abuse victims discover a new path through all the nonprofit organization’s wide-ranging programs and resources, which include counseling; educational services; a safe shelter for women, men, and children; and a 24-hour crisis hotline.&nbsp;

Now, thanks to a $95,000 donation from the DeVos Family Foundation as part of their 30 Grants for 30 Years Initiative, Harbor House’s outreach will extend further into the Central Florida community and help empower even more domestic violence victims to overcome their struggles by introducing a Family Justice Center.&nbsp;

The first center of its kind in Central Florida, and only the second center in the state, the Family Justice Center will bring public and private partners together under one roof to provide wraparound services. For families seeking services, coming to one location is faster, more immediately helpful, and far less expensive than traveling to multiple locations throughout the county. Victims will no longer need to recount details of their abuse multiple times, legal papers can be filed right away, and cases will be completed more quickly, with the ultimate result that families can be safer sooner.

“When I found out about the grant, and after I was done crying because it’s such an amazing gift, I thought about how the community itself is going to come together and be able to offer amazing services to survivors,” Sperzel said. “When someone is experiencing domestic violence, often they have to go to fourteen or fifteen different locations in order to receive the services they need. And for us to be able to sit down and have a conversation in our community about how we pull all those services together into one spot – that are going to be survivor focused and survivor informed – is going to only help our entire community be able to address domestic violence.”&nbsp;

Harbor House currently anticipates serving at least 4,300 clients per year through the center.

ORLANDO - There is a gap between the growth of the city of Orlando and the opportunities reaching its most underinvested neighborhoods.

This gap was recognized by residents, businesses, and community leaders who all saw the need to strengthen these historic areas. As a nonprofit organization and part of the Purpose Built Communities Network, Lift Orlando has engaged these groups in the region to usher in mixed-income housing, cradle-to-career education pathways, health and wellness services, and economic viability opportunities since 2013.

Importantly, the organization is committed to partnering with local schools to deliver a high performing educational pipeline, beginning with early childhood and continuing all the way to promising careers.

Now, thanks to a $150,000 donation from the DeVos Family Foundation, as part of its 30 Grants for 30 Years Initiative, Lift Orlando will be able to provide even more support for this cradle-to-career philosophy that is flourishing in the Communities of West Lakes.&nbsp;

“Knowing your life is valuable and that others see your unlimited potential is critical to the mission of Lift Orlando and we want to communicate that in everything we do,” Lift Orlando President Eddy Moratin said. “To see the DeVos family and the Magic come alongside our most valued residents and children in a way that invests in their futures and unlimited potential is exactly our greatest hope for the role and leadership of our business community.”&nbsp;

Studies have shown that a person’s ZIP code has a greater impact on their health than genetic code. With that in mind, Lift Orlando firmly believes this can be a favorable statistic for those who live in the Communities of West Lakes.&nbsp;

With support from community leaders, this area has built up a lot to offer, including Central Florida’s largest Boys & Girls Clubs, an early learning center (in partnership with AdventHealth), and the brand-new Heart of West Lakes Wellness Center – representing the heart of a healthy neighborhood ecosystem designed for residents of all ages to thrive.

Over the last few years, Moratin, his staff at Lift Orlando, and community partners have helped cultivate the rapid rise in spirit, enthusiasm, and optimism among residents.

“It’s a humbling privilege to witness the residents who already call this community home and already strive to make it better become the leaders of the charge for how the community is transformed,” Moratin said. “In so many places in America, the definition of success for communities of color is to leave the community and maybe be as far from it as possible. It is incredibly gratifying to see that in West Lakes the definition of success, as our vision states, is watching a place become a neighborhood where children grow up with hope and will return with joy.” &nbsp;

ORLANDO – In times of financial crisis, one of the most challenging obstacles is finding where to turn for guidance and assistance.

Since 2009, United Against Poverty Orlando (UP) has been on hand to fill that role and offer aid for neighbors in need in Central Florida.

It’s UP Orlando’s mission to serve those in poverty by providing crisis care, case management, transformative education, food and household subsidy, employment training and placement, personal empowerment training, and active referrals to other collaborative social service providers.

“Our purpose is to inspire and empower people living in poverty to lift themselves and their families to economic self-sufficiency,” said United Against Poverty CEO Gwendolyn Butson. “We offer a hand up, not a handout.”

Serving nearly 9,000 households across Central Florida, UP Orlando focuses on teaching empowerment rather than entitlement. It aims to achieve this goal through its four key programs.

First is their Member Share Grocery Program (MSGP), which is a dignified food and household assistance program where income-qualified members can personally select the food, hygiene, and household items that fit their family’s needs, while saving up to 70 percent of their household food and product budget. UP Orlando's MSGP helped families retain over $4 million in 2020 alone.

UP’s Crisis Stabilization Program (CSP) partners with those in crisis situations to gain the skills, resources, and coaching needed to stabilize their life and work toward a permanent higher ground. In 2020, the CSP helped a total of 12,767 times with crisis stabilization services to families in need.

In lockstep with the belief of offering a hand up and not a handout, UP Orlando's Success Training Employment Program, along with their Education Program, helps participants overcome employment barriers while strengthening their skillsets with courses that focus on adult literacy, parenting, budgeting, nutrition, computer skills and more.

“Poverty is not a one size fits all,” Butson continued. “United Against Poverty’s mission is to end poverty one family at a time.”

Now, as a result of a $45,000 donation from the DeVos Family Foundation through its 30 Grants for 30 Years Initiative, UP Orlando will be able to sustain and expand their four-program offering for families throughout Central Florida.

And thank you for investing in our organization and helping us fulfil our purpose and our mission of living lives out of poverty right here in Central Florida. From all of us here at United Against Poverty, thank you for this outstanding gift.”

This donation is just the latest contribution from the DeVos Family Foundation. As part of the DeVos family’s 30 Grants for 30 Years Initiative, a total of $3 million will be donated to 30 area nonprofit organizations over 18 months, investing in people and projects impacting youth, essential needs for families, and community enrichment across Central Florida.
