The DeVos Family

A Legacy of Partnership

The DeVos family purchased the Orlando Magic in September 1991. Since then, the family has proudly served as the franchise’s caretakers while operating under the belief that the NBA franchise ultimately belongs to the Central Florida community and the loyal fans.

Since purchasing the team, the franchise has won six division championships, two Eastern Conference titles and had seven 50-win seasons, including a franchise-record 60 victories in 1995-96. The Magic have advanced to the playoffs 16 times during that span, while finishing with a .500 record or better in 17 of the last 28 seasons.

The operation of the Orlando Magic has always been a passion and priority for the entire family – starting with the late Rich and Helen DeVos, and their four children. Today, Rich and Helen’s children and grandchildren are active with the team and affiliates as well.

Affiliates include the team’s NBA G League franchise, the Osceola Magic, which began play in 2017-18 and captured the NBA G League championship in 2020-21; the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL, which serves as the affiliate to the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning; and Magic Gaming, which began competing in the NBA 2K League in its inaugural season in 2018.

A Legacy of Family

Rich and Helen DeVos Court

Even after their passing, the legacies of Rich and Helen DeVos are still imprinted on the Orlando Magic organization. In 2019, the Orlando Magic permanently dedicated its home court at the Kia Center to honor its late senior chairman and his wife. The court prominently features a “Rich and Helen DeVos Court” memorial insignia.

“What a perfect way to honor all that Mr. and Mrs. DeVos brought to the Orlando Magic organization and the Central Florida community,’’ Magic CEO Alex Martins said at the commemoration. “From the beginning, Mr. and Mrs. DeVos’ vision was that the team and organization would serve as a platform to improve the Central Florida community. That legacy will certainly live on, both in the Orlando Magic’s community efforts and philanthropic contributions, as well as in the way we strive to play the game with passion, a strong work ethic, and integrity, while also bringing people together from all walks of life. Our court will now forever commemorate Mr. and Mrs. DeVos, who made that vision a reality.’’

A Legacy of Philanthropy

DeVos Family Philanthropic Work in Central Florida

After purchasing the Orlando Magic in 1991, Rich and Helen DeVos’ vision for the Orlando Magic was that the team and organization would serve as a platform to help the Central Florida community. They led by example, donating more than $2 million annually to the local community through grants, event sponsorships, donated tickets, and autographed merchandise.

Rich understood the impact professional sports can have on the upcoming generation and inspired his family to remain committed to ensuring the team provides a positive, encouraging example for all.

Today their legacy lives on through the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation, positively impacting nearly 100,000 youth each year through programs addressing education, the arts, homelessness, health and wellness.

In 2021, the DeVos family celebrated 30 years of stewardship as caretakers of the Orlando Magic. To mark this milestone and as an expression of gratitude to the fans and the Central Florida community, the DeVos family committed to donating a total of $3 million to 30 nonprofits through the 30 Grants for 30 Years Initiative. Throughout the 2021–2022 and 2022–2023 seasons, representatives from local nonprofits received on-court recognition during team home games and a gift from the DeVos Family Foundation. Nonprofits also received recognition on the Orlando Magic’s digital platforms, providing another chance to share their stories and the impact of their work in the community.
