John Drew of Atlanta committed 14 turnovers in a game at New Jersey, an NBA record. Jason Kidd of the Phoenix Suns tied the record by committing 14 turnovers against New York on November 17, 2000.

Calvin Murphy of the Houston Rockets missed a free mthrow in San Antonio, ending his NBA record consecutive free throw streak at 78. Murphy’s record was broken by Minnesota’s Micheal Williams, who put together a streak of 84 consecutive free throws through the end of the 1992-93 season. The streak eventually grew to 97, before Williams missed a FT attempt early in the 1993-94 season.

Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors scored 100 points, the most ever by an NBA player in a single game, during his team’s 169-147 win over the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Chamberlain shot 36-of-63 from the field and 28-of-32 from the free-throw line, to go with 25 rebounds. His 50.4 ppg scoring average in 80 games during the 1961-62 season remains an NBA record.

He had 24 points at halftime, then added 25 in the third quarter. The record-breaker came with 5:46 left, when James spun through three defenders for a layup that fell as he tumbled to the court.

San Antonio Spurs legend and Hall of Famer Tim Duncan makes his debut as an NBA coach, serving as the Spurs’ acting head coach in a 104-103 road win against the Charlotte Hornets. Duncan was filling in for coach Gregg Popovich, who missed the game due to personal reasons.

Arbitrator John Feerick upheld the NBA’s suspension of Latrell Sprewell for the 1997-98 season, resulting in a monetary penalty of $6.4 million, finding that the NBA’s investigation was “done in good faith and was fair and adequate.” Feerick also found “that the NBA complied with the standards of industrial due process.” He reduced the NBA’s suspension to the extent it had included approximately one month of the 1998-99 season. However, the arbitrator reinstated Sprewell’s contract with Golden State for the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 seasons, finding that the combination of a one-season suspension and a contract termination would not be appropriate under all of the circumstances.

The Spurs defeated Milwaukee 171-166 in triple-overtime in San Antonio in what was then the highest scoring game in NBA history. The mark of 337 points was erased when Detroit beat Denver 186-184, also in triple-overtime, on December 13, 1983 for a total of 370 points.

The Milwaukee Bucks defeated Seattle 104-99 to run their winning streak to 20 straight games, the second-longest winning streak in NBA history, behind the 33 consecutive games won by the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1971-72 season. Milwaukee finished the 1970-71 season with a 66-16 record and went on to capture the NBA championship.

Atlanta defeats the Miami Heat in the first NBA “do-over” game in a quarter-century. On December 19, 2007 Atlanta’s scorer mistakenly fouled out Miami’s Shaquille O’Neal with 51.9 seconds left in overtime and the Hawks up, 114-111. Miami appealed and the league ordered the end of the game to be replayed. The game ends in anti-climactic fashion, as neither team scores. Despite having only five fouls, Shaq does not play in the redo, having been traded in the interim to the Phoenix Suns.

George Yardley of the Detroit Pistons became the first NBA player to score 2,000 points in a single season.

The Boston Celtics defeated the New York Knicks 148-128 at Boston Garden, giving the Celtics their 59th win of the season, topping the previous NBA high for wins in a season by seven. The Celtics also set NBA records during that 1959-60 season for the most field goals made per game (49.9) and field goal attempted per game (119.6) and the most rebounds per game (71.5). All three records still stand more than 40 years later.

Wilt Chamberlain, who played one season with the Harlem Globetrotters before moving to the NBA, has his No. 13 retired by the Globetrotters when they play at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, Chamberlain’s alma mater. Chamberlain, who is the first Globetrotter to have his number retired, is one of five people with Globetrotters ties to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The four others are William “Pop” Gates, Connie Hawkins, Marques Haynes, and founder Abe Saperstein.

Sloan won 1,221 games in his career, which was the fourth-highest total in NBA history at the time of his passing. Sloan was a former player for the Chicago Bulls from 1966-76 and his jersey hangs in the rafters of the United Center.

Baylor played a major role in revolutionizing basketball from a ground-bound sport into an aerial show. The NBA and the Players Association reached a four-year agreement that included a revenue-sharing plan, the first of its kind in team sports. Players received 53 percent of revenues starting the 1984-85 season in return for minimum and maximum payrolls.

Phoenix coach Cotton Fitzsimmons guided the Suns to a 128-111 home win over Portland, becoming the sixth coach in NBA history to chalk up 800 career wins.

After defeating the visiting Phoenix Suns 97-83, the San Antonio Spurs become the 11th NBA team to go unbeaten over a month, with a 16-0 mark in March. The Spurs tied the 1971-72 Lakers (who were 16-0 in December of 1971) for the winningest month ever by an NBA team.

The NBA announced the NBA Legends Tour, which featured a star-studded team of former NBA players that traveled to China for a series of games against the Sydney Olympics-bound Chinese Men’s National Basketball team. Three international exhibition games were staged August 11, 14 and 17 in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai, respectively, against the Chinese Men’s National Basketball team.

Chicago’s DeMar DeRozan scores 50 points in an overtime win against the LA Clippers. In doing so, he became the 14th different player to reach the half-century mark this season, setting a new NBA record. He was also the seventh different player to go for at least 50 in the month of March alone, setting a new single-month league record as well. Overall, there were nine instances in which a player scored 50 points in March, 2022, with the feats being accomplished by: DeRozan, LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Karl-Anthony Towns and Saddiq Bey.
