Matchup History
The history of the Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs is littered with matchups between basketball legends. In the late 1970s and early 80s, prolific scorers “Dr. J” Julius Erving and “The Iceman” George Gervin went head-to-head, even meeting in the Eastern Conference semifinals in 1979. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, “The Answer” Allen Iverson would fearlessly take on “The Big Fundamental” Tim Duncan.
Now, these contests are headlined by a new era. The Sixers are led by 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid and star caliber players, like Tyrese Maxey. The 76ers hosted the Spurs on January 22 at The Center, winning 133-123 with a career and franchise history setting night from Joel Embiid. The reigning MVP put up 70 points, 18 rebounds, and 5 assists, becoming only the 8th player in NBA history to record 70 points in a game. On top of that, he recorded 24 points in the 1st quarter alone. He became the only player in NBA history to record at least 70 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists in one game.
Their second and final meeting of the season on April 7 was another career night for a 76er. Tyrese Maxey recorded a career-high 52 points against the Spurs in a thrilling double overtime win for the Sixers, with a final score of 133-126.
