'Throw It Down' with Bill Walton returns for Cavaliers-Wizards

The NBA legend returns Monday night for a special broadcast of Cavaliers-Wizards, live only on the NBA App.

Bill Walton

Bill Walton is joined by Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir for the 3rd episode of ‘Throw it Down’ this Monday night.

“Intergalactic volcanic eruption, Phoenix, Toronto, players, coaches, fans, Jason Benetti!” NBA legend Bill Walton exclaimed as he opened last week’s “Throw It Down” telecast, his hands gesticulating furiously, his face not even in frame.

“I am a Raptor,” he continued, sitting down, fully descending into view, as he and co-host Benetti prepared to broadcast the Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns game. “I don’t eat fruits and vegetables. I eat iguanas, lizards, and snakes.”

If you have yet to watch “Throw It Down,” that’s all you need to know.

The chaos and fun of the wild Walton experience continues tonight, as he welcomes viewers back into his sanctuary for the third week of his alternate game telecast, “Throw It Down with Bill Walton.”

This evening, legendary musician and Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir will join the show.

For the past two weeks, Walton has brought viewers into his home, offering his unique perspective on all things basketball, music and life.

In the first quarter of the Suns-Raptors game, Phoenix’s Mikal Bridges exploded for 16 points, much to Walton’s delight.

He used the opportunity to express his love for Bridges.

But Walton doesn’t just love Mikal Bridges. He also loves the Golden Gate Bridge, the Coronado Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, and of course, the natural bridges.

“The bridge,” he said. “The ultimate metaphor for life.”

The best of the Raptors-Suns episode.

Walton played numerous instruments throughout the telecast, including his chimes of freedom and gong while his cauldron stewed in the background. On that telecast, he was joined by fellow Hall of Famer and a boisterous TV personality himself, Charles Barkley.

Barkley echoed the sentiments of anyone who has met Walton or even listened to him over the years. “I’m only doin’ this because of the great Bill Walton, I love that guy.”

Legendary singer-songwriter John Mayer of Grateful Dead and Company also joined the show. Mayer credited Walton, a major Deadhead, for giving him confidence early in his days with the band, urging him to “shoot the ball” on the guitar.

Mayer mentioned it is quite easy to spot Walton in the crowd at concerts.

The 6-foot-11 former center, a member of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, holds his arms up in the crowd like he’s an “air traffic control for the flight patterns of the Grateful Dead.”

The life and times of Walton continue this week with a matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Washington Wizards, with Weir making an appearance.

If it’s anything like the past two weeks, it will be full of hilarity, Deadhead anecdotes, and maybe some NBA analysis if there’s time.
