Both the California Classic Summer League and Salt Lake City Summer League tipped off on Monday, giving some of the league’s youngest talent an offseason stage on which to flash its potential.
Several prominent prospects didn’t disappoint, posting dominant numbers as proof that they could factor into their respective teams’ fortunes next season. Here’s a look at some of the best individual performances from Monday’s action:
California Classic
Jaime Jaquez Jr., Miami Heat
Outside of the hometown Kings in the nightcap, no player got a bigger crowd reaction during pregame introductions than Miami’s Jaime Jaquez Jr. The No. 18 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, who is a California native and hails from UCLA, had plenty of supporters in northern California to take in his first action in a Miami Heat uniform.
Following that huge ovation, Jaquez went out and missed his first two shots and committed three fouls in the first 3 ½ minutes of the game before settling in quite nicely as the game progressed. After having more fouls (3) and points (2) in the first quarter, Jaquez exploded for 12 points in the second quarter, including this spectacular and-one dunk in transition that put Miami up by 12 points.
After shooting 1-for-5 in the opening quarter, Jaquez went 7-for-10 the rest of the game as the Heat kept the Lakers at bay and cruised to a 107-90 win. He capped off his night with an open corner 3-pointer (his third triple of the game in seven attempts) with 90 seconds to play to give him a game-high 22 points in just 22 minutes.
Julian Champagnie and Dominick Barlow, San Antonio Spurs
When the Spurs and Hornets were added to the California Classic, there was the potential of a showdown between the top two picks in the 2023 NBA Draft, San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama and Charlotte’s Brandon Miller. Unfortunately for the fans in attendance, that did not happen, as Wembanyama will not join the Spurs until the NBA 2K24 Summer League in Las Vegas.
Taking the place of the Wemby-Miller showdown was the Julian Champagnie and Dominick Barlow show as the Spurs jumped on the Hornets from the opening tip – opening the game on a 17-2 run – and never looked back in their 98-77 win.
Champagnie scored 20 points in the opening half and finished with a game-high 30 points as he shot 9-for-20 from the field and made five 3-pointers, giving the archery celebration after each splash. He also added eight rebounds, four steals, two assists and posted a game-high plus-28 in 25 minutes.
In just 23 minutes of action, Barlow posted 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting, while collecting game highs with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Brandon Miller, Charlotte Hornets
It was an up-and-down Summer League debut for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 Draft. Miller finished with a team-high 18 points thanks to three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as well as an and-one layup for a three-point play for the final points of the game. Of course, the game was well decided by that point, but it was good to see Miller find his rhythm late in the game.
It was a struggle early on as Miller didn’t score until midway through the second quarter and finished the game with more turnovers (6) and fouls (7) than made baskets (5) in his summer debut. It will be interesting to see how he follows up this game when the Hornets return to action on Wednesday against Golden State.
Keegan Murray, Sacramento Kings
It’s not often that a player that started on a playoff team is playing in Summer League, but Sacramento’s second-year forward welcomed the extra work and showed out in front of the home fans from the opening tip.
Just a minute into the game, Murray went coast-to-coast and threw down a one-handed monster dunk that drew and explosion from the crowd — including teammates Malik Monk and Davion Mitchell sitting courtside — and forced a quick Warriors timeout.
Murray, the MVP of the NBA 2K23 Summer League a year ago in Las Vegas, kept it going as he scored 13 points in the opening quarter. He had 16 points at the half and 21 through three quarters and started the fourth quarter on the bench with Sacramento holding a nine-point lead. When the Warriors cut the lead to one, Murray returned to help close out the 100-94 win. He finished with game highs in both points (29) and minutes (31).
Salt Lake City Summer League
Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City Thunder
It’s easy to forget the Thunder’s 2023 Play-In Tournament appearance occurred without Holmgren, the No. 2 overall pick from last year’s Draft. After a tantalizing showing at the 2022 Summer League, a foot injury derailed his rookie season before it even began.
Holmgren was finally back on Monday, working off the rust enough to show just enough of what has Thunder fans so excited. The seven-footer put up 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in under 30 minutes of action, with his two-handed rejections earning the biggest reactions during the Thunder’s 95-85 win over Utah.
Williams, meanwhile, showed why All-Rookie First Team members are a cut above most Summer League competition. The Thunder guard shot 8-for-14 for a smooth 21 points in 21 minutes, including 3-for-5 from deep.
Kenneth Lofton Jr., Memphis Grizzlies
Another undrafted member of the 2022 class, Lofton Jr. showed how effective interior position can be with a 21-point, 13-rebound performance in the Grizzlies’ 94-92 win over the 76ers. The 6-foot-7, 275-pound forward bullied his way to the free throw line for 10 attempts while also dishing out four assists in a well-rounded effort.
More importantly, Lofton Jr. shot 2-for-4 from 3-point range, an eye-raising development if it proves consistent.
