• Summer League: Complete Coverage
The 20th year of NBA summer hoops in Las Vegas wrapped up Monday with an instant classic. The championship game between the Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies went to overtime, with the Heat prevailing 120-118 on a game-winning shot from second-round pick Pelle Larsson. Here’s a look at the players who closed out their Summer League with a bang:
Josh Christopher, Miami
Christopher closed out his scintillating Summer League with an MVP performance, scoring 24 points on 9-for-17 shooting while committing just one turnover. The former first-round pick and NBA G League veteran is making a case to join an NBA team’s regular-season depth chart at guard. Miami’s backcourt currently features Terry Rozier, Tyler Herro, Alec Burks, Josh Richardson and Summer League teammate Pelle Larsson.
Scotty Pippen Jr., Memphis
Pippen’s all-around game was a welcome sight in Summer League, which can lack heady playmaking. Pippen provided that and then some, amassing 29 points, 11 assists and five rebounds in the Grizzlies’ narrow title game loss. On a two-way contract, the 6-foot-1 guard offers welcome insurance behind a Memphis backcourt that suffered rotten injury luck last season.
Kel’el Ware, Miami
One year after drafting Jaime Jaquez Jr. 18th overall, the Heat may have again struck gold in the middle of the first round. Ware, selected 15th overall last month, closed his promising Summer League with 21 points and 10 rebounds on 8-for-10 shooting. The 7-foot Ware figures to factor into Miami’s frontcourt rotation immediately, reinforcing a group headlined by Bam Adebayo and Nikola Jovic with veterans Kevin Love, Haywood Highsmith and Thomas Bryant behind them.
Jake LaRavia, Memphis
The 19th overall pick in 2022, LaRavia is yet another option on what figures to be a deep Grizzlies team in 2024-25. The 22-year-old forward poured in a game-high 32 points on 11-for-21 shooting and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. LaRavia did most of his damage in the paint, a welcome sight after Memphis ranked last in paint scoring last season.
Alondes Williams, Miami
After going undrafted in 2022, Williams has stayed on the NBA radar via two-way contracts and G League reps. Monday’s performance showed the kind of all-around potential he could offer: 21 points, five rebounds, six assists and 4-for-9 shooting from 3-point range. Fresh off being named the G League’s Most Improved Player, Williams’ upside could factor into a Heat team trying to steady itself in the Eastern Conference.
GG Jackson, Memphis
Still just 19 years old, Jackson’s scoring ability belies his age. The former second-round pick notched 28 points on 11-for-16 shooting and nine rebounds in Monday’s title game. The 6-foot-9 Jackson is a legitimate option for Memphis’ frontcourt, which will need proven production beyond Jaren Jackson Jr.
