BUT FIRST … ⏰

That’s a wrap on the 2024 NBA Draft …

1. FIRST TWO-NIGHT DRAFT IN THE BOOKS

Two rounds, two nights and 58 potential stars.

The 2024 NBA Draft presented by State Farm was poised to make history with its new two-day format, regardless of who was selected.

Yet fittingly, the inaugural multi-day Draft produced monumental results, beginning with France rewriting the record books in Round 1. | Recap: Every pick and reported trade | 5 Takeaways from Round 1

  • French History: With the selections of Zaccharie Risacher (No. 1, Hawks), Alex Sarr (No. 2, Wizards) and Tidjane Salaun (No. 6, Hornets), France became the first country outside the U.S. to produce three top 10 picks in the modern Draft era (since 1966)
  • Unprecedented Top Picks: Risacher and Sarr are the first two French players to be selected with the top two picks in the history of the Draft, and Risacher joins Victor Wembanyama as the first consecutive No. 1 picks to hail from France
  • Worldwide Lottery: Five players born outside the U.S. were selected with lottery picks (Nos. 1-14), and nine international players from six countries were selected in the first round, including a record four from France

The globe kept spinning in the second round, as 11 international players from 10 countries were drafted on Thursday. | 3 Takeaways from Round 2

  • Breaking Borders: In total, 20 international players from 12 countries were drafted, including 15 players from Europe and a record-tying five French players overall
  • International Love: Those 20 international players are the third-most in a single Draft since the event expanded to two rounds in 1989, trailing only 2016 (27) and 2003 (21)
  • An Academy First: Ulrich Chomche (No. 57, Raptors via Timberwolves) became the first prospect to be drafted directly from the NBA Academy of Africa

In the college ranks, a pair of iconic programs overtook the lottery, while a former USC Trojan found a new home in Hollywood.

  • Reigning Champs Rule: UConn led all colleges with four selections, headlined by top 10 picks Stephon Castle (No. 4, Spurs) and Donovan Clingan (No. 7, Trail Blazers), giving the Huskies multiple lottery picks for the first time since 2012
  • Kentucky Pipeline: Kentucky freshmen Reed Sheppard (No. 3, Rockets) and Rob Dillingham (No. 8, Timberwolves via Spurs) also went in the top 10, marking the 17th straight year in which the Wildcats have produced at least one first-round pick – the longest active streak among colleges
  • Bronny Joins LeBron: With the 55th overall pick, the Lakers selected Bronny James, the son of LeBron James, potentially setting the stage for them to become the first father-son duo to play on the same team at the same time

2. LAKERS SELECT BRONNY JAMES, SET UP FIRST ACTIVE FATHER-SON DUO EVER

Entering Thursday, 51 father-son duos had been selected in the common era of the NBA Draft (since 1966). But none had seen the father still playing when the son reached the league.

Until now.

The L.A. Lakers selected Bronny James – the eldest son of NBA all-time leading scorer LeBron James – with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, creating the NBA’s 1st active father and son duo.

And they may be teammates.

LeBron has until June 29 to decide on his player option to return to the Lakers or become an unrestricted free agent. If he enters free agency, he could re-sign with the Lakers, and play side-by-side with his son.

Bronny enters the NBA after one season at USC, with LeBron and family in attendance at his games in L.A. when the Lakers were in town. Similarly, Bronny was a fixture at LeBron’s games from Cleveland to Miami and L.A.

  • LeBron’s Reaction via Instagram: “LEGACY!!!!!! 🤴🏾🤴🏾”

Bronny James gets selected 55th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers, where he will be able to play with his father LeBron James.

They have trained with each other in the driveway and in the gym, and now have a chance to embark on a season unlike any in NBA history.

LeBron was selected first overall in 2003 – 21 years and one day before Bronny – and is set to enter his 22nd NBA season, tying him with Vince Carter for the longest career in NBA history.

In a career that’s already been a one-of-one, there are still more firsts for LeBron (and Bronny) to achieve.

3. MORE NBA DREAMS FULFILLED IN THE SECOND ROUND

Another day, another venue, but the same dreams being fulfilled as 28 players heard their names called in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft on Thursday from ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in New York.

Collective Joy: Colorado guard KJ Simpson was overcome with emotion when the Hornets landed him with the 42nd overall pick.

Familiar Crosstown Rivals: With the 46th overall pick, the LA Clippers selected Minnesota wing Cam Christie, bringing him to Los Angeles where his older brother, Max, plays for the Lakers.

  • With camera in hand, Max was in attendance to capture his brother’s dream come true
  • 🗣️ Cam On Playing In LA With Max:We’re really close – we talk every single day … It’s really hard to put into words how cool this is.”

From Nigeria to Philly: With the 41st pick, the 76ers selected the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Adem Bona out of UCLA with his mother by his side and a Sixers fan back home in Nigeria.

  • Bona’s basketball journey took him from Nigeria to Turkey to Los Angeles and now sends him to Philadelphia
  • 🗣️ Bona: “I’m so excited to be there. Actually, my older brother is a Philly fan. He’s really excited now, probably. He’s back at home in Nigeria watching … I can’t wait to get there to get to work.”

International Flavor: 11 international players from 10 countries were selected in the second round, including some countries that have not been represented at the draft in years.

  • Quinton Post (52nd by Golden State): Became the first pick from the Netherlands since 2009
  • Bobi Klintman (37th, Pistons via Wolves): Klintman became the first player from Sweden drafted since 2015. Sweden had to wait only seven picks for its next selection in Pelle Larsson (44th, Heat via Rockets)
  • Ariel Hukporti (58th, Knicks via Mavericks) – MVP of Basketball Without Borders Global 2020 – joined Tristan da Silva to give Germany two players selected in the same draft for the second time ever

College Standouts: A slew of notable names from the college game also found new homes on Thursday.

  • Kyle Filipowski (Duke): 32nd by Utah
  • Tyler Kolek (Marquette): 34th by New York via Portland
  • Jamal Shead (Houston): 45th by Sacramento (reportedly traded to Toronto)
  • Cam Spencer (UConn): 53rd by Detroit (reportedly traded to Memphis)
