1. JALEN WINS IT FOR TEAM JALEN AT RISING STARS

Bennedict Mathurin leads Team Jalen past Team Detlef in the 2024 Panini Rising Stars championship game.

Needing two points to reach the target score of 25, the ball was in Jalen Williams’ hands. The OKC sophomore saw the defense drop, so he pulled up from 26 feet and drained the walk-off 3-pointer to win the Panini Rising Stars for Team Jalen over Team Detlef.

Game Clinching buckets: By playing to a target score in all three games, each game would either be decided by a made basket or free throws. On Friday, it was all about game-winning shots:

While the team was named after its honorary coach, former Indiana Pacer Jalen Rose, it was fitting that a Jalen was the one to score the winning bucket. Williams finished with five points and three assists in the Final, and had two points and another three dimes in Team Jalen’s semifinal win over Team Tamika.

The star of that semifinal win was Pacers second-year guard Bennedict Mathurin, who scored 18 of the 40 points needed to advance, including the game-winning bucket on a picture-perfect fadeaway jumper over Scoot Henderson. Mathurin added four points and two assists in the Final to earn MVP honors, which drew an ovation from the home Indy crowd.

In an event designed to showcase the game’s top young talent, Team Detlef’s squad of G Leaguers showed that they belonged, knocking off Team Pau, which was loaded with much of the league’s top rookie talent, including four of the top five in the Kia Rookie Ladder.

The G League squad used an 11-0 run to take control of the game early. Team Pau rallied, cutting the deficit to a single point, but Team Detlef had the ultimate answer – a game-high 12 points from Mac McClung, and a tough turnaround baseline jumper by Matas Buzelis over Brandon Miller to seal the win.

Victor Wembanyama, who arrived to his first All-Star event in style , finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. He only had one assist, but made it count on this lob to Jaime Jaquez Jr.

2. PARSONS WINS CELEBRITY GAME MVP

Celebrities are used to performing under the bright lights.

On Friday, they performed on top of the bright lights — 25 million LEDs to be exact — as the Ruffles Celebrity Game marked the debut of the state-of-the-art LED Court at Lucas Oil Stadium for All-Star weekend.

Regardless of the lighting, NFL superstar Micah Parsons came ready to play as he dropped a Celebrity Game record 37 points to go with 16 rebounds, four steals and three assists to lead Team Shannon to a 100-91 win over Team Stephen A in a clash of ESPN First Take co-hosts.

  • “A Top 5 Moment” Parsons ranked his Celebrity Game MVP performance as a top five sports moment in his career
  • The Statline: The last player to put up a 37/16/4/3 NBA game was Joel Embiid in 2021. Of course, it helps to have rules like the “Ruffles 4-Point Ridgeline” and “Ruffles Crunch Time” – when all points are doubled for two minutes – to boost the numbers

Parsons attacked the basket like he does opposing offenses, but rather than finishing with sacks, he threw down thunderous dunks. But it wasn’t all power. He showed a bit of finesse, breaking out a Eurostep and a slick spin move in the lane for a bucket.

While Parsons was the star of the night, he didn’t do it by himself. Fellow NFL star Puka Nacua (16 pts) and actor Dylan Wang (18 pts) combined for 34 for Team Shannon.

Texans quarterback CJ Stroud led Team Stephen A with 31 points, while trick shot artist (and Starting 5 contributor) Tristan Jass added 27 points, 10 boards and six dimes, including the first bucket of the night.

T Jass and fellow YouTuber Kai Cenat exchanged jerseys postgame. Cenat entered the building alongside Steph Curry, but came up just short of his pregame prediction of 30-45 points with 10 dimes and 17 boards.

4. EXCLUSIVE Q&A: SABRINA, AHEAD OF TONIGHT’S SHOWDOWN WITH STEPH

With Stephen vs. Sabrina – the first-ever NBA vs. WNBA 3-Point Challenge – taking place tonight, we caught up with the 3-point contest record-holder herself, Sabrina Ionescu, to discuss the build up to the event, some trash talk, and her top five 3-point shooters ever.

What have the past few weeks been like for you since it was announced?

“It’s been a whirlwind. In just knowing how many people have supported us, and thinking about just what we’re able to accomplish and this being the first of its kind and knowing that hopefully this is going to just lay down the foundation for many more competitions to come.”

I had a bunch of players in here today, and asked all of them about the competition. Chet and Wemby specifically stood out, chose you. What does their support and support in general from the NBA mean to you?

“Well, I love that. someone picked me so shout out to Chet and Wemby. It’s been amazing. I’ve been able to watch all of the social media videos and been able to see who chose who.

“It’s been fun; I think about being able to go out there and compete. Obviously representing myself, my team and the league and him being able to do so as well, and doing that together, and being able to push the needle in terms of doing something that’s never been done is going to be really exciting.”

Those are just two off the top of my head. A lot of them picked you.

“Thank you to everyone. Yeah, I need all the votes.”

Are there any NBA players that have reached out to you that have kind of been special to you or moments like that?

“I mean, I would say, I would just say Steph, you know, obviously him being the one, we’ve been talking about this for some time.

“And so being able to finally see that our idea, that was kind of a joke, now turned into something that’s really happened is really exciting and we’ve been talking about this for some time and so we’re excited to get together and go out there and do our best.”

I heard there’s a little bit of trash talk though between you guys. What’s the insight on that?

“I mean, we go back and forth, obviously, we compete. We’ve had many competitions against one another and in closed gyms and workouts.

“And so to be able to go out there on, on the big stage and do it is something we haven’t done before. We’re excited to see who’s able to, to call himself a champion.”

You can think about this for a second. But who’s your Mount Rushmore of three point shooters? And you could combine like WNBA and NBA?

“OK. Can I put myself?

Of course.

“OK. I would say obviously Steph, Ray Allen, Diana Taurasi, me.

“Oh, and then I gotta pick one more. Reggie Miller.”

Nice. And my last question is … who’s gonna win?

“Me.”

That’s it?

“That’s it.”

Practice time: We were with Sabrina as she arrived in Indy and headed to the practice gym to simulate a round before an unexpected guest crashed the party.
