Julian Champagnie was expected to compete for a role in the Spurs’ rotation this season, but he’s taken things a step further. The third-year forward has earned a starting role, making contributions on both ends of the court that have been pivotal for a San Antonio team that sits at 11-9 ahead of the quarter mark of the 2024-25 season.
Champagnie has been tasked with a bigger role due to injuries to key players Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell. Even as the Spurs approach full health, Champagnie’s strong play has earned him a consistent role in the rotation after averaging just 19.8 minutes per game last season.
This season, Champagnie is logging a career-high 29.5 minutes per game while averaging 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals and starting in each of the Spurs’ 20 games. He’s also shooting the ball more confidently (43.6 FG%), an upgrade compared to his 40.8% mark in 2023-24.
Interim coach Mitch Johnson seems to like what Champagnie brings to the table on both ends of the court. Plus, having him in the lineup offers a bit more balance in the rotation, as it allows Vassell and Johnson to ease back in. Champagnie’s length is a defensive asset, allowing the Spurs to play aggressive defense with a lineup featuring himself, Harrison Barnes, Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama.
