Fresh off their first championship since 2008, the Boston Celtics are taking steps to ensure their core stays together to defend their title.

Per multiple reports, the Celtics and guard Derrick White have agreed to a four-year, $125.9 million extension. The deal prevents White — who could have become a free agent next offseason — from leaving the Celtics for the foreseeable future and keeps the team’s top players together for 2024-25.

The Celtics originally acquired White from the San Antonio Spurs for Romeo Langford, Josh Richardson and a 2022 first-round pick. The addition of White has paid off for Boston, though, as he helped lead the team to the NBA Finals in 2022 and was a key rotation player for Boston in 2023-24 as it won the championship.

Last season, White posted 15.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1 steal and 1.2 blocks per game in 73 games for the Celtics. He finished eighth in voting for Kia Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-Defensive Second Team for the second straight season.

In the postseason, White proved his worth and was a vital cog after averaging 16.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.1 apg and 1.2 bpg as the Celtics collected their 18th championship in franchise history. Aside from bringing back White, the Celtics also reached reported deals with big man Neemias Queta and Luke Kornet.
