Basketball Africa League (BAL)

BAL Day 6: SLAC, USM cruise to wins

The Basketball Africa League continues as US Monastir (Tunisia) takes on Dakar Universite Club (Senegal).

Basketball Africa League Day 6 recap:

Game 1: Seydou Legacy Athletique Club 90, Clube Ferroviario de Beira 74

SLAC moved to 2-2 on the season after defeating Beira Saturday.

Full game:

When a traditionally defensive player like Chris Obekpa finishes 3-for-3 from the behind arc it tells the story of SLAC’s 90-74 win over Ferroviario da Beira on Saturday at Dakar Arena.

Five SLAC players converted at least one 3pt each to help the Guinean champions improve to 2-2 in the Sahara Conference with one game left.

The Conakry-based team finished the game with 13 for 23 from behind the three-point line.

Obekpa finished 13 points and 11 rebounds, Marcus Crawford, who finished the opening quarter without contributing a single point, owned the following quarter.

The sharpshooter converted 4 three-pointers to lead all players in scoring with 15 points at the break. Eventually, Crawford finished with a game-high 23 points.

Dane Miller Jr. contributed 14 points and 8 assists; Josh Nzeakor had 19 points and Ibrahima Fofana sank his two 3pt attempts to go with 12 points.

Game 2: US Monastir 74, Dakar Université Club 62

Despite being undermanned, USM took down DUC Saturday to remain undefeated.

Full game:

Monastir Head Coach Modrag Perisic attributed his short-handed team’s 74-62 win over Dakar Universite Club (DUC) to a tremendous team effort, but the way Ater Majok and Firas Lahyani impacted the game can’t be overlooked.

The pair proved too much for DUC on Saturday to help US Monastir cruise to the Basketball Africa League (BAL) playoffs unscathed in four games in the Sahara Conference.

Majok paced the Monastir-based team with 20 points and 13 rebounds – his fourth double-double in as many games – , he protected the rim with 4 blocks while Lahyani was 8-for-10 from shooting to finish with 19 points and 8 rebounds.

Although DUC home fans showed up again to boots the ‘students’ morale against a tough opponent, there was little they could do as US Monastir dominated and decided the game in the painted area.

The runners-up of last year’s BAL out-rebounded DUC 45-33, scored 34 of their 74 points near the basket to cover the absences of influential Souleymane Diabate and Michael Dixon.
