Friday’s Best WNBA Picks

Chicago Sky @ Seattle Storm (-10) – 161.5 O/U (-110/-110)

One of the late-night WNBA games tonight features the Seattle Storm hosting the Chicago Sky. As the spread indicates, this is a clear mismatch with Seattle coming in hot and Chicago slumping lately. Let’s see how to attack the game from a betting standpoint.

Seattle is playing like one of the best teams in the league over the past month-plus. The Storm are 12-3 straight-up (SU) and 11-4 against the spread (ATS) over the past 15 games. Jewell Loyd (20.2 PPG) and Nneka Ogwumike (17.2 PPG) are anchoring a potent offense averaging 84.2 PPG (3rd in WNBA) and 31.0 made field goals per game (2nd). Seattle plays at the league’s second-fastest pace with Skylar Diggins-Smith (13.9 PPG, 6.1 APG) running the point.

The Storm also boast a top-tier defense, allowing 77.9 PPG (3rd in WNBA) while holding opponents to 42.2% shooting from the field and 32.9% from three-point range (both top-four marks). Center Ezi Magbegor sets the tone defensively, putting up 2.2 blocks and 1.6 steals per game, while five other Seattle players are also averaging over a steal per contest.

Meanwhile, Chicago has looked like one of the WNBA’s worst teams recently. The Sky are 4-8 SU and 3-9 ATS over the past 12 games. Their weaker offense is a big reason for the losses piling up. Chicago is averaging just 79.4 PPG this season (9th in the league) while shooting 42.1% from the field (11th) and 30.3% from three (last). The Sky will likely struggle to score when facing the elite-level Storm defense tonight.

Chicago has failed to cover the spread as an underdog in seven straight instances and is just 3-8 ATS as a dog this season overall. The Storm, on the other hand, are 11-4 ATS as favorites this year and 5-0 ATS when favored by 8+ points.

Seattle also has a notable home-court advantage, covering seven straight games at home. When these teams faced off earlier this year, the Storm earned the 9-point road win. Let’s take them tonight to get another comfortable victory.

WNBA Pick: Storm -10 (-108)

Atlanta Dream @ Dallas Wings (-2) – 166 O/U (-110/-110)

Friday night’s matchup between the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings won’t garner much fan interest with both teams struggling to losing records thus far. Even so, there’s always a betting angle for the under-the-radar WNBA games. Let’s break it down.

Dallas games tend to be higher-scoring due to a poor defense that’s arguably the worst in the WNBA. The Wings are giving up 88.1 points per game and 31.9 made field goals per game, both last in the league. They’re also allowing opposing teams to shoot 45.3% from the field (second-worst).

The Wings’ defense has been especially porous lately. They’ve allowed 90+ points in seven of the last 10 games with opposing teams averaging 90.7 PPG against them since the beginning of June. In turn, Dallas is 7-3 to the over in the past 10 games and 11-7-1 to the over this season as a whole.

Admittedly, Atlanta isn’t the best team to exploit Dallas’ poor defense. The Dream are averaging a league-low 76.0 PPG with the worst field-goal percentage as well (40.4%). Still, they boast two veteran scorers in Alisha Gray (15.8 PPG) and Tina Charles (14.2 PPG). Plus, Jordin Canada has stepped up lately with Rhyne Howard sidelined.

Atlanta has also played a tough schedule to this point with eight games against top-tier teams (New York, Connecticut, Minnesota, Las Vegas). When they’ve faced easier competition, the Dream’s offense has been able to put up points. They’re averaging 81.7 PPG in the 10 other games vs. softer opponents (Washington, Indiana, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas).

Despite their defensive issues, the Wings do have some talented scorers. Arike Ogunbowale is second in the WNBA in scoring (23.7 PPG) while four others are also averaging double-digit points. Two recent additions are giving Dallas a clear offensive boost with Natasha Howard back from injury and Odyssey Sims signing last week.

Take the Over here. This should be a higher-scoring with Dallas’ bad defense being the main factor. Atlanta is 4-1 to the Over in the past five games and put up 83 points against the Wings earlier this season.

WNBA Pick: Over 166 Total Points (-110)
