Amongst the super-sized 11-game NBA slate is an intriguing Eastern Conference clash between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. Both teams are off to strong 3-1 starts this season, with aspirations of a deep playoff run. In this high-powered matchup, I expect the stars to shine.
Which brings me to one of the Celtics role players: Derrick White. Last season’s key midseason acquisition has moved into a starting role, but his production has remained inconsistent. He’s stayed under this points line in three of four games, failing to exceed 26 minutes and eight shot attempts in each. The one outlier was a 27-point eruption against the lowly Orlando Magic.
Against the Cavs’ stout defense, I’m expecting White’s scoring to fall on the lower end of the spectrum. With their big front line, Cleveland protects the paint well, allowing the fifth-lowest frequency of field goal attempts at the rim.
White is a below average perimeter shooter, having made only 31% of his 3-point attempts and 37% of his overall jump shots last season. While he’s shooting better to start this season, I expect some regression towards his career averages.
Malcolm Brogdon looms on the bench, and is more likely to see the crunch time minutes if this game remains close until the end. Even with Grant Williams serving a suspension tonight, I don’t foresee that positively affecting White’s rotation minutes.
I have the sixth-year combo guard projected at 8 points tonight. I’d play this under up to -130.
Pick: Derrick Under 10.5 Points (-120)
