The Brooklyn Nets travel south looking for their 10th straight victory when they take on the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night.
The Hawks, meanwhile, are looking to build some positive momentum after dropping their last matchup against the Pacers in Indiana.

Brooklyn Nets
When the Nets fired Steve Nash on Nov. 1, they had two wins and six losses. It looked like the super team featuring Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving was headed into another season of failure.
Irving and the Nets were dealing with an off-court controversy, while the basketball team was in disarray on the court. That all seems like ages ago now, as the Nets have turned into the best team in the NBA under head coach Jacque Vaughn.
Since taking over, Vaughn has led the Nets to the league’s best record at 20-6. Brooklyn is now shooting for its 10th straight win and its 14th victory in its last 15 games.
The Nets have also been a profitable team at the betting window, owning a 17-9 against-the-spread record under Vaughn. That includes a 7-4 ATS record at home and a 10-5 ATS mark on the road. It has not been financially sound to fade Brooklyn.
One of the big reasons for the Nets’ turnaround has been the play of Durant. Durant ranks sixth in the NBA in scoring at 30 points per game. In the month of December, he has shot 58% from the field and 42% from 3.
What’s most impressive is that Durant has played in 33 of the Nets’ 34 games this season.
Irving has also played well since rejoining the team. Over his last 10 games, he’s averaging 28 points per game to go along with six rebounds and five assists while shooting 49% from the field.
With both Durant and Irving in tow, the Nets are once again serious title contenders.
Atlanta Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks own a 17-17 record this season, which is good enough to be the ninth seed in the East.
The Hawks are an up-and-down team that doesn’t play with much discipline. Atlanta has a talented roster, but it seems to be an immature team when it comes to on-court play.
This unit is 6-11 away from home this season. A record that poor from a talented team shows me that the Hawks don’t take road trips seriously. That’s a characteristic of a young team, not a team that plans on competing for a conference title.
Trae Young is an NBA All-Star and the Hawks’ best player, but recent rumors of a rift between Young and head coach Nate McMillan seem to be affecting the Hawks on the court. There are even rumors that Young may be looking to leave Atlanta if the Hawks don’t make a deep playoff run.
However, Young suffered a calf injury against the Pacers last night and is listed as day-to-day.
The Hawks, like the Nets, could turn this season around, but it will have to start with playing better on the road. Atlanta is also 6-11 ATS on the road this season, but it’s been much better at home (11-6), where tonight’s game will be played.
McMillan’s team is a home underdog for only the fourth time this season. It’s 2-1 ATS and straight up in the three previous games.
Nets-Hawks Pick
Atlanta defeated Milwaukee and Denver as home underdogs this season but lost to Boston by 25. Now, the Hawks welcome a red-hot Nets team that is hitting its groove.
A focused Brooklyn squad that has both Durant and Irving playing at a high level should roll tonight in Atlanta.
Pick: Nets -6.5 |
