The Hawks will travel to Mexico City to take on an injured Magic team on Thursday night. Can the Hawks capitalize, or will the Magic role players step up here?

Let’s get to our Hawks vs Magic prediction and pick.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks have started off the year rolling on offense as they rank fifth in both Net Rating and Offensive Rating. They also have done a great job on the offensive glass with the third-highest Offensive Rebound Rate.

I’ve liked their shot profile as they have slightly increased their Rim Rate and 3-point Attempt Rate. They currently rank fifth in the NBA in Rim Rate and 22nd in 3-point Attempt Rate while ranking just 20th in Midrange Attempt Rate. This is a massive improvement over last year where they ranked dead last in 3-point Attempt Rate, 19th in Rim Rate and second in Midrange Attempt Rate.

Their shot quality has been much improved, and they should remain efficient on offense here as the Magic will be without their best rim-protector, Wendell Carter Jr. The Hawks should also have an edge on the offensive glass without Carter Jr. available for the Magic.

Trae Young and Dejounte Murray may struggle a little if both Markelle Fultz and Jalen Suggs play because Suggs and Fultz combine to form one of the more formidable defensive backcourts in the NBA.

Orlando Magic

The Magic have basically played to expectation this year as they’ve won and covered every game they were favored and lost and failed to cover in three of the four games where they were underdogs.

4-3 is a solid start for this team, but expect them to struggle without Carter Jr. over the next few weeks. Nobody talks about him in national media, but he is a borderline top-10 center in the NBA and does a little bit of everything on the court.

This is a decent matchup for the Magic offense as the Hawks rank 22nd in Opponent Rim Rate Allowed. The Magic are third in Offensive Rim Rate so they should be able to exploit this weakness.

The Hawks don’t have great defenders to match up with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, so I expect these two to have solid nights and carry the load for the Magic on offense. The Magic definitely deserve to be underdogs here, but I see paths to success for their offense.

Hawks vs. Magic Prediction

This line was sitting around Atlanta -2.5, and I hesitated to pull the trigger on the Hawks.

Now that this line is up to Atlanta -3.5, I will likely stay away from this game.

Pick: Hawks -2.5 or Better
