The Philadelphia 76ers and the Toronto Raptors meet for the first time this season tonight in Toronto. The 76ers eliminated the Raptors in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs, but can Toronto get revenge at home against Philly tonight?

76ers Starting Slow
Despite the NBA season being barely a week old, Philadelphia 76ers fans on social media have already given up hope on the 1-3 76ers. To be fair, two of the 76ers’ three losses have come against the Celtics and Bucks, likely the two best teams in the Eastern Conference. The 114-105 home loss to the Spurs as 14-point favorites was not a good look, but it’s still early in the season.
A road victory tonight against a tough Raptors team will help settle the fanbase down.
Scotiabank Arena has not been kind to Philadelphia over the past few seasons. The 76ers are 1-7 ATS and 2-6 on the moneyline in their last eight regular season trips to Toronto. The 76ers were the favorites in five of those eight games, and most shops have the 76ers as one-point favorites going into tonight’s game.
There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Philadelphia: James Harden doesn’t look washed up like he did last season as he is off to a strong start by averaging 26 points, eight rebounds and nine assists per game. Joel Embiid is getting his numbers as well, averaging 26 points per game, including a 40-point performance vs. the Spurs.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the slow start. This is still a team that will flirt with 50 wins and finish the season as a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference.
Can Siakam and VanVleet Carry the Raptors Without Barnes?
The 2-2 Raptors have played in some competitive and interesting games to start the season. They opened their 2022-2023 campaign with a 105-102 home victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Then they lost back-to-back road games to the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets by a combined seven points.
In their latest outing, they bounced back in Miami to win by eight points despite being 3.5-point underdogs. So far this season, the Raptors are 3-1 ATS and 3-1 to the under.
Toronto is at its best when Pascal Siakam is on his game. He is off to a hot start by scoring 26 points per game to go along with 10 rebounds and six assists. Fred VanVleet is also a key piece for the Raptors with his defense, team leadership and timely 3-point shooting.
However, the Raptors may not have reigning rookie of the year Scottie Barnes when they take on the Sixers tonight. Barnes was injured in Miami and has already missed one game. If Barnes is out, look for Precious Achiuwa to step up for Toronto. In the Raptors’ last outing against the team that drafted him, Achiuwa put up 10 points and grabbed 22 rebounds.
76ers-Raptors Pick
The Raptors and 76ers are evenly matched teams, and they will likely play a one-possession game tonight in Toronto. So far this NBA season, road favorites are 8-10-1 ATS, but when the road team is a favorite of three points or fewer, as the 76ers are tonight, those teams are 5-3 ATS and 6-2 on the moneyline.
The 76ers are the healthier team and have more to play for. Consequently, I like them to get the win tonight in Toronto.
Pick: Sixers -1
