We’re just weeks removed from the NBA Finals and NBA Draft, and already there’s more basketball to be played.
The NBA machine just keeps on churning.
Official play will commence on Thursday, July 7 and end on Sunday, July 17. But already, teams are revving up for the tournament with their own exhibition games.
Most notably, No. 2 overall pick Chet Holmgren put on a show against the Utah Jazz in the Salt Lake City Summer League on Tuesday night. The former Gonzaga big man became the first-ever player to put up at least five blocks and make four 3-pointers in a Summer League contest.
Holmgren finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, six blocks, four assists and a steal, including 13 points in the first quarter — more than the entire Jazz team scored during that frame.
With that debut, the Thunder became among the odds-on favorites to win the NBA Summer League. Oklahoma City has the second-shortest odds to win (+750) at BetMGM as of Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Holmgren’s odds to win Rookie of the Year skyrocketed as a result of his debut, too. My colleague Tommy Stokke delves into more details here. The crux is that Holmgren is now the favorite to win the ROY at most American sportsbooks, catapulting him above former favorite Paolo Banchero, who was drafted No. 1 overall.
The Thunder also feature fellow first-round pick Ousmane Dieng from France and 2021 No. 6 overall pick Josh Giddey, who had a productive season as Oklahoma City’s primary ball handler.
The odds-on Summer League favorites are the Detroit Pistons, who have constructed an experienced roster led by 2021 No. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham, 2020 No. 7 overall pick Killian Hayes, Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart. Their odds are +650 at BetMGM.
The rest of the oddsboard is a hodgepodge for the remaining teams in the field. No other team is shorter than +1200, which implies odds of roughly 8%.
Detroit was the favorite to win the tournament in 2021 at roughly +550 odds before failing to qualify for the later rounds.
The Sacramento Kings (+3000) ended up winning the tournament, beating a Celtics squad that had been +2500 to win.
