Pre-Draft Outlook

They’d never say it publicly. But the Spurs are taking a page out of the book of former San Antonio front office man Sam Presti in Oklahoma City in utilizing a slow, measured approach to building a roster capable of long-term sustainability. Obviously, Victor Wembanyama makes for the ideal foundational piece. Now it’s time to start building in earnest around the franchise superstar. The Spurs used the 2023-24 campaign as an audition of sorts to determine which players will go forward with Wembanyama. Before that, San Antonio collected a stockpile of Draft capital to maintain flexibility in how it could build. But don’t expect the Spurs to smash the gas just yet in accelerating the rebuild.

The Way To Go

The most pressing need remains at point guard. The Spurs learned the importance of pairing Wembanyama with a high-level setup man. Acquiring that player could prove costly, whether it’s through free agency or trades. But the Spurs are eyeing several options there that include Tyus Jones, the older brother of reserve point guard Tre Jones. The Spurs own two top 10 picks to potentially address that need. They could draft a point guard of the future with one of those picks while bringing in a veteran to groom him. San Antonio won’t use both of those picks on point guards, however. Nikola Topic has generated a buzz as a potential point guard option for the Spurs at No. 4 along with Kentucky’s Rob Dillingham. Cody Williams is a solid wing option at No. 8 that could help immediately.
