Pre-Draft Outlook
The Houston rebuild moves into another phase after a prolific 13-2 run in March that included an 11-game winning streak as the Rockets finished 41-41. The hiring of Ime Udoka to preside over the project proved just as fruitful as any player acquisition. So, with a solid, young core in place, it appears shooting has become a priority in Houston. At the same time, there’s an expectation that the Rockets’ holdovers will naturally improve in that department. Lockdown defense has always been a hallmark of any Udoka-coached team, and the Rockets finished 10th in defensive rating last season. Given Houston’s vast young core and draft capital, everything is on the table, including the potential trade for an established star like Donovan Mitchell.
The Way to Go
Expect Houston to consider all options. The club likes its young core, considering six of its recent first-round picks have contributed. The Rockets could choose to move back in the first round and add to their treasure trove of assets. They could also use the No. 3 pick in a trade package to land an established star. If the Rockets stay put at No. 3, look for them to bolster shooting with a prospect such as Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard, who connected on better than 50% from 3-point range last season. If available Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, Zaccharie Risacher and Matas Buzelis appear to be fits as well.
