2023 NBA Draft Prospect Highlights: Jalen Slawson
Overview
Jalen Slawson grew up in Summerville, South Carolina and won Area Player of the Year as a senior at Pinewood Preparatory School with averages of 14.6 points, 10.5 rebounds, 4.1 blocks and 3.5 assists per game. He committed to playing college basketball at Furman for his freshman year in 2018-19. Slawson started to make a lasting impression his true senior season in 2021-22, averaging 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.7 blocks. He was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Year (Coaches) and to the All-SoCon First Team. The accolades piled up again as a fifth-year senior with Slawson again making All-SoCon First Team in addition to SoCon Player of the Year (Coaches). The forward averaged 15.6 points on 56/39/78 shooting, 7.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks. With Slawson leading the way, Furman won the Conference Tournament and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Analysis
Slawson is a fantastic defender, and he’s talented enough to switch onto some guards and bigs when necessary. He’s strong off the ball as well. Motor isn’t a question. Offensively, he’s best going to the basket with a head of steam, whether that be in the halfcourt or in transition. While he lacks handle and shiftiness with the ball, he’s able to read when he’s forced a defense to collapse and make the right pass. Slawson’s perimeter shooting is inconsistent.
Projection
Slawson may benefit from getting G League reps as a rookie, rather than sitting at the end of the bench for an NBA team. If his shot comes along, Slawson could be a role player sooner than later, as his defensive IQ will make coaches want him on the floor. Slawson’s defensive ability makes him a bit like a jumbo Matisse Thybulle, though the former is a more talented playmaker.
