Prospect Overview

Unique scoring guard with great speed and shiftiness with the ball who lived in the lane in his breakout sophomore season at North Carolina State.

About Dereon Seabron

Dereon Seabron is an aggressive slashing guard who turned a corner in his development as a sophomore at North Carolina State.  A fringe top-150 prospect in the high school class of 2019 following his postgraduate year at Massanutten Military Academy (VA), Seabron redshirted his first season with the Wolfpack and averaged just 5.2 points over 17.1 minutes per game as a second-year freshman.

Stepping into a much larger role as a sophomore under head coach Kevin Keatts, Seabron was one of the most improved players in the country averaging 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.1 assists over 35.8 minutes per game to earn All-ACC second team honors.

• Measured standing 6-foot-5.75 in shoes with a slim 182-pound frame and a 6-foot-8.75 wingspan at the 2022 NBA Draft Combine, Seabron has nice size for a shooting guard.  He is a very good athlete with good explosiveness with the ball and unique physicality for his dimensions.

• Leading the Wolfpack in points, rebounds, and assists per game, Seabron is a somewhat unconventional guard whose scoring was rooted in the unrelenting pressure he put on the rim this season.  With the vast majority of the shots he attempted in the half court coming in the lane, he used his speed, ability to change gears, and knack for willing in contested shots inside to score in bunches despite teams gameplaning around his tendencies.  Scoring opportunistically in transition and on the offensive glass, Seabron’s energy level played a role in his productivity as well.  His ability to get a piece of the paint also made him a more productive passer than his numbers suggest.  For all the things he does well, Seabron still has significant room to improve as a jump shooter to round out his skill set.

• Rebounding the ball at an exceptional level for his size and coming up with some deflections hunting opportunities to get out in transition, Seabron had some nice moments defensively, but has room to mature as an off ball defender and bring more consistent intensity.

Advanced Stats

• Frequently bringing the ball up the floor, Seabron played a key role for North Carolina State.  While he led the team in points and assists he was also responsible for moving the defense on a lot of possessions that he did not record a statistic.  Doing much of his damage out of pick and rolls, his shiftiness off the bounce and ability to find a way to sneak the ball in the basket being extremely aggressive allowed him to put significant pressure on opposing defenses even when they knew what was coming.

• With nearly 80% of his shots coming in the immediate vicinity of the rim, Seabron scored 1.00 points per shot around the rim in the half court [31st percentile] doing a tremendous job changing speeds to find his way to the rim.  As aggressive getting downhill out of ball screens and crashing the offensive glass as any guard in recent history, Seabron got a piece of the paint virtually every possession.  Finishing explosively in space but with creative footwork and both hands at times as well, his efficiency is fairly impressive for just how relentless he was forcing his way inside.

• Averaging 0.79 points per pull-up jump shot [53rd percentile] but attempting few shots away from the rim, Seabron sometimes looked fairly capable away from the rim, but lost his balance and appeared out of rhythm on many shots as well.  He showed some touch at the foul line, but remains early in his development as a three-point threat.

• Displaying really good instincts in transition, on the offensive glass, and seeking out contact around the rim, Seabron’s aggressiveness translated in several areas outside of his dribble drive game.  His ability to grow into more of a shooter and continue to improve as a passer would only add to all the ways he puts pressure on the rim.

Defensive Analysis

• Among the top rebounding guards in college basketball, Seabron’s nose for the ball and explosiveness made him a presence on the defensive glass.  Showing some energy in the passing lanes as well, the 22-year-old hunted opportunities to turn defense into offense.

• Showing some toughness on the ball in spurts, Seabron is still learning where to  be off the ball and how to be a presence consistently on the defensive end.
