Dave and Carol Cameron are the founders of Honor Flight Michigan, Inc., which gives World War II veterans the opportunity to fly to Washington, D.C., all expenses paid, to view their memorial.
Honor Flight Michigan began less than a year ago when CBS ran a special titled “In their Honor.” It was then that Dave and Carol knew they needed to find a way to bring the World War II veterans to see the memorial.
“It is an honor and a privilege to spend time with our World War II veterans,” said Gary May, Honor Flight’s Vice-President for Communications. “It gives us a great opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to them.”
This occasion also provides World War II veterans the chance to connect with friends they haven’t seen in more than 40 years, according to May. “It’s actually happened a couple of times,” he said. “They just can’t take pictures fast enough.”
Accepting the American Red Cross Michigan Heroes award on behalf of Dave and Carol Cameron will be Fred Reichel from the 303rd Bomb Group, 15th Air Force, who was captured and held after his plane was shot down in Germany. Reichel will be joined by 303rd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force pilot Bob Stauffer.
Honor Flight Michigan relies heavily on donations from Michigan businesses. May pointed out that there isn’t too much time left to help the remaining veterans reach the memorial as they are all between the ages of 80-102. If you are interested in making a donation or for more information, please visit www.honorflightmichigan.com or call (248) 744-0286.
