Internship: Marketing Department

Content Intern (Fall of 2008 through Spring of 2009)

Dallas Mavericks (Dallas, Texas)

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: November 2008 through April 2009; duration is also based on performance and/or business needs.

HOURS PER WEEK: Minimum of three days a work week from 9am – 4 pm, and all Dallas Mavericks home games played at the American Airlines Center.

COLLEGE/GRADUATE SCHOOL SEEKING CREDIT Preferred:
Paid, No other employee benefits, and relocation expenses will not be covered.

PURPOSE:
The Dallas Mavericks are looking for qualified applicants to experience a professional work environment by assisting the Marketing staff with a variety of journalistic content duties relating to The Dallas Mavericks Marketing Department.

Assist the Marketing Department on various duties and responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Beat coverage of the team:
    • Write game stories, features and notes packages from games and practice;
    • Write features from marketing promotion and community events.
  • Posting:
    • Post original work on Mavs.com through NBA Portal and NBA Content Manager;
    • Update top stories section with links to stories, promotion events and photos;
    • Retrieve photos from Photos.NBA.com or internally from the teams Manager of Publications.
  • Update MavsWiki and Friends.Mavs.com:
    • Features and game stories posted on MavsWiki (www.mavswiki.com);
    • Update Mavs social network site Friends.Mavs.Com (www.friends.mavs.com) with links to features and other promos in Forum section, plus upload photos;
    • Remain active on both sites.
  • Coordinate coverage of major events:
    • Gather content from major announcements, such as trades and coaching changes;
    • Be available for last-minute press conferences or breaking news.
  • Miscellaneous writing and proofing:
    • Assist in writing features for Tip-Off game program;
    • Write games time alerts for e-blasts;
    • Proof different marketing materials as needed.
  • Dallas Mavericks home game days:
    • Attend morning shoot around and update Friends.Mavs.com with the latest notes;
    • Attend pre-game coach’s press conference and locker room availability and update Friends.Mavs.com;
    • Write and post game story along with notes on Mavs.com;
    • Post game story on MavsWiki and Friends.Mavs.com.
  • Practice Days:
    • Attend practice and update Friends.Mavs.com site with the latest notes;
    • Write and post practice story along with game preview on Mavs.com.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be currently enrolled in a Jr. or 4-year college or graduate school or have a college or graduate school degree with a preferred concentration in Journalism with minor in Business Administration or Marketing (Sports Marketing) is preferred;

  • If applying for college credit you must be able to provide proof that credit will be earned toward your course of study (from school/registrar).

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be proficient with MS – Word & PowerPoint and HTML.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, manage multiple projects at once, take initiative and pay close attention to detail;
  • Must be flexible to occasionally work late hours and a minimum of 3 days a week and all Dallas Mavericks home games;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work closely with other employees, players, coaches and other local & national media;

Must take pride in the work to promote the brand of the Dallas Mavericks.

Merchandise Department: Lead Supervisor (3rd Key)

Dallas Mavericks Ultimate Fan Shop, NorthPark

If you are an aggressive, competitive individual seeking to begin your sports career, the Dallas Mavericks have a great opportunity for you. We are currently searching for a unique and outstanding individual. This individual must have at least one year of retail experience, and ideally with management experience in a customer service related field.
The ideal candidate must:

  • Have a high level of professionalism, competitiveness, positive attitude, and an eagerness to learn
  • Have a friendly and professional telephone manner
  • Display an outstanding ability to listen well
  • Effectively express ideas verbally and in writing
  • Independently take action beyond what is called for
  • Be able to generate original and imaginative solutions to business opportunities or predicament
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule
  • Have cash handling/register experience
  • Build relationships to provide repeat business and excellent customer service
  • Act proactively to create opportunities for new business with existing customers
  • Pursue prospective customers
  • Manage multiple relationships
  • Build a good rapport with customers

This part/full-time position, which may lead to future growth opportunities, will assist upper management members in overseeing the staff and daily operations to ensure a quality shopping experience.

In addition, under the direction of The Dallas Mavericks Ultimate Fan Shop the qualified candidate will have the opportunity to hone in on their sales skills in a professional environment, while learning the sports business.
