Chalmers Leads HEAT to Win Over Nets
by DeAndre Phillips

Mario Chalmers had his second solid outing, recording 19 points, nine assists and three steals, including a momentum-halting take away late in the fourth quarter, to help the HEAT (2-0) hold off the New Jersey Nets (1-1), 90-81, in day two of the Orlando Pro Summer League.

The Nets overcame a 14-point deficit to go up by one, 75-74, following a Brook Lopez put back with 5:10 remaining in the fourth. But Chalmers answered back immediately with a lay up, sparking a 14-3 run over the next four minutes, to put the game out of reach.

Chalmers was strong during that stretch, scoring four points and adding three assists. He also made a crucial steal near the Nets' basket following his go-ahead lay up which led to him finding a cutting Kasib Powell that halted New Jersey's momentum.

"He carried us on his back today," said Michael Beasley, who finished with nine points and seven rebounds. " He played tremendous. I'm really impressed."

Powell and Anthony Morrow picked up the scoring slack and came through big at critical times. Powell, who scored 17 points in a starting role, had a couple of timely drives to the basket that kept Miami atop during its late-game run. Morrow finished with 19 points off the bench and kept the HEAT in the game by going 5-for-7 from three-point territory, two of which came during the HEAT's game-ending run.

Despite his veteran-type play throughout the contest, Chalmers deflected praise given to him for the team pulling together for the win.

"We all (put the onus on ourselves to win)," he said. "When our best player is struggling, we had three players who scored over 15 points tonight. Anytime that happens it's good."

However, it was Chalmers' play on both sides of the ball that was the difference in the game. The rookie out of Kansas is making an early case for playing time at the point guard position.

Throughout the game, he drew defenders in with hard drives to the basket and kicked it out to a teammate for an open shot. Many of Morrow's points came off drive-and-dish passes from Chalmers.

He also has been a wiz at creating ball pressure. Two of his game-high three steals were "pick-pocketed" steals, where he took the ball out of the hands of Jaycee Carroll and Yuta Tabuse.

HEAT Summer League Head Coach Keith Askins, who was known for his defensive prowess during his nine-year NBA career, is taking notice.

"He's a very skilled basketball player," he said. "He's making the most of his opportunity. If you read the paper, that's one of the positions that we're looking at. Everyday, he's making a first impression. When you're trying to make it in this league, everyday is a new day and a first impression."

Asked if he accomplished what he had set out to do against the Nets, Chalmers replied: "Yes, (I accomplish what I wanted). We got the victory. That's all that matters to me."

Pacers vs. HEAT

The HEAT will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Stephen Graham and the Indiana Pacers in game three of the day.

Cook Injury Update

Daequan Cook, who suffered a slightly separated shoulder during practice last week, no longer needs the support of a sling and has begun light, non-contact workouts. He is expected to miss two to four weeks.

Beasley Injury Update

Michael Beasley suffered a bruised left shin during Tuesdays' contest versus New Jersey. The injury happened at the 6:48 mark of the third period when the Nets Sean Williams inadvertently kicked Beasley while driving to the basket. The injury is not serious and he is expected to play Wednesday versus the Pacers.

Beasley is still recovering from a slightly cracked sternum, which was suffered in practice last week. He is wearing a protective vest during contests.
