May 15, 2004 | Conseco Fieldhouse | Miami HEAT - 83 | Indiana Pacers - 94
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
Opening statement:
"They played a lot, lot, lot harder than us. Offensively we were horrible. We had more defensive break downs tonight than we’ve had in our eleven other playoff games combined. No way we win a game on the road with the effort we put forth tonight."
On Jeff Foster:
"Foster was fabulous he gave them a huge, huge lift. Obviously, they were not running plays for him. His points came off of offensive rebounds or our defensive breakdowns. We looked totally unprepared tonight after a game like this, the coach has to take the blame for not having the team ready. I take the blame for this game tonight.”
HEAT Forward Caron Butler
General:
"We came out and didn’t play as well in the second half as we did in the first. I don’t really have an answer to what happened but I think we moved the ball better in the first half than in the second. It’s kind of mind boggling to try to figure out what the difference was in the way we played. "
On playing at home vs. on the road:
"It’s tough coming into a place like Conseco and it seems we play a half or three quarters but we have to play 48 full intense minutes to beat a team like Indiana in their place."
On Tuesday’s Game 6:
"The ball is in our court to try to force a game 7. We’re going to have to come out with a lot of hustle and play with passion. I’m not saying that guarantees a victory, but on our floor it gives us a better chance. It’s of course, tough playing on the road. I thought we played hard and with a lot of intensity. But then all of a sudden you look up and see you’re down 20. But I know going back to our home floor, we’re going to have a chance to force the final game of the series.”
HEAT Center Brian Grant
“I don’t have to look at the film of this game tonight. They (Indiana) beat us with the things that we’ve been usually good at in the regular season. Jeff Foster was the recipient of our defensive breakdowns tonight. Here’s a guy that they don’t look at to go to with their offense. He’s a great rebounder and today he had an outstanding effort. He was able to get a lot of offensive rebounds. He was in position off of their pick and rolls to get the pass and get the basket. Those are things we have to correct. We look forward to playing in Miami and eliminating some of our mistakes from this game."
On being concerned if they can execute on the road:
“Tonight showed me that we can score on the road. I’m not worried about that. We’ve just got to take care of things on the defensive end. We don’t have to do anything differently with our scheme, we’ve just got to play.”
HEAT Forward Malik Allen
On his continued success offensively:
“It’s a little bit of the same thing as before in the other games. I’m just trying to stay aggressive, find the openings in the defense and get their bigs moving around a little bit and go from there.”
On a possible game 7 at Conseco Fieldhouse:
“We have to have 100% belief in ourselves. We have to play a 48-minute game here. So far, we’ve played one or two quarters against them and then we have some kind of a breakdown and we can’t get it back. We just have to play Heat basketball for 48 minutes, and be mentally strong. Tuesday night we’ll get it done and we’ll bring it back here for game 7.”
On Jeff Foster:
"Jeff Foster had an incredible game. He energized their whole team and the whole crowd. You’ve got to give him credit for what he did out there tonight. He played over the top, what a great effort. We have to find a way to match that Tuesday night.”
Pacers Head Coach Rick Carlisle
General:
“We played a good game. Miami came at us hard early and we struggled a bit but we played a strong willed game tonight. Better defense and better rebounding, that was the key. ”
On Jeff Foster:
“Jeff Foster stepped in and played the most important and best game of his career. His scoring activity comes from other players. He has a knack for getting to the open spot. He didn’t do anything different tonight than he normally does other than he stayed out of foul trouble early. As a team we had good ball rotation and when that happens it gets guys like Jeff open.”
On going back to Miami for Game 6:
“Miami’s home record speaks for itself. 18 wins in a row is an awesome number. If we go down there and play as so-so game, we’ll get beat. We’ll have to play our best game of the playoffs to have a chance.”
Pacers Center/Forward Jeff Foster
On overall game:
"One of the biggest impacts was our ability to keep Odom (Lamar) under control. I think Al (Harrington) and I worked very hard and forced him into some shots that he really didn’t want to take. Our board work was much better, as we all crashed the boards to get a rebounding edge. They are a very strong team and we expect them to come back tough the next game. They have a lot of fight in them. They will not give up. We’re going to go to Florida and try to steal a game there.”
Pacers Forward/Center Jermaine O'Neal
On offensive start:
“It wasn’t the offense, it was our defense. Good defense creates good offense. Miami is a very strong and physical team and when you hit the boards and can get out on the run, you’re going to beat some teams."
On his two early fouls:
“As I went out and we went into the huddle, I asked them to stay focused on the ball game and not worry about me and my two fouls. We needed to continue to get the ball distributed, not only on the breaks; but anytime that we saw the open person. Jeff Foster was just outstanding. I tell him at practice every day that he has not tapped into his true talent. Jeff is going to continue to improve and really, really help us.”
On going to Miami on Tuesday:
“We’re going out there hoping to close the serried out. Obviously this will take total effort because we know they’re going to be tough and we’ll have to play a real good basketball game."
Pacers Guard Reggie Miller
On Jeff Foster:
“Unbelievable. He really brought the energy physically but mentally he was so prepared. He got every loose ball and did an admirable job on Lamar Odom. He was everywhere."
On his three pointer in the second quarter:
“Our crowd has been electric all series and it was like they were waiting for something to happen. Our energy level was 10 times greater tonight than in Games 3 and 4. We need to bottle it and take it back there.”
On Ron Artest guarding Dwyane Wade:
“We’re going to try and throw different guys at the rookie. He’s having a great series.”
