May 10, 2004 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 94 | Indiana Pacers - 87

HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy

On the game:
“If Reggie Miller is even in the building and gets a shot off at the end of the game then it is going in. The Pacers hit some shots late that were just incredible. All of a sudden Jamaal Tinsley is the best three-point shooter in the NBA. Give the Pacers a lot of credit. They just kept on coming at us. I thought we played real well. They hit some threes, but I didn’t think we gave them good open looks at threes tonight. I thought we defended them very well by holding them under 40 percent. After the first quarter we played much better offensively. I am obviously real pleased about this win. Our guys just hung in there very well and made some very crucial plays down the stretch. We did get our shots better distributed tonight. When we get six guys with seven or more shots then we are a little more tougher to guard.”

On Malik Allen:
“I cannot say enough about Malik’s contribution; especially in the first half. He really kept us afloat. I just love these stories. Here is a guy that was in our nine-man rotation earlier and then he got hurt, and then we sort of went away from him. Then in this series he has come back and played very well because he keeps himself ready. I always appreciate professionals like that. We have a locker room full of guys like that.”

On playing at home:
“If I knew what made us so good at home then I would take it on the road with us. The atmosphere is incredible. I think this is one of the best atmospheres in the NBA. Our guys really feed off of the energy and electricity in this building. I think our guys want to perform for the fans.”

On Dwyane Wade:
“Dwyane has very little fear for a rookie. If the media could go back and do the Rookie of the Year voting after the playoffs then they might change a little bit. Dwyane is a very good pull-up shooter. Dwyane has learned from earlier in the series that he cannot always drive to the basket. The number one thing about Dwyane Wade, besides his obvious talent, is for his ability to learn and make adjustments.”

HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade

On his man off the dribble:
“I am very confident about beating the first man to the basket. It is the second and third that I’m worried about.”

On the game:
“If we wanted to win we knew we had to outrebound them tonight.”

“We missed some shots early but what got us going was defense. Caron Butler had some great stops against Ron Artest.”

“We were very confident even though we were down 2-0. The (Indiana) Pacers took care of their home floor, which is what a team is supposed to do. We have to come in and take care of ours. We are taking it game for game. Right now we got one game in our house and we have one more coming up. We’ll try to get that one and go back to Indiana and see what we can do.”

On the end of the fourth quarter:
“They are a great three-point team. (Jamal) Tinsley is an unbelievable three-point shooter now and Reggie Miller is always dangerous.”

On the physicality of the game:
“I don’t know about everybody else but after any playoff game you are going to hurt the next day. When game time comes you are going to feel fine. It’s the playoffs, it’s going to be physical. That’s what we expect.”

HEAT Forward Lamar Odom

On the game:
“This was a very important win for us. Without this win, the percentages wouldn’t have been in our favor for teams coming back down 3-0. Dwyane [Wade] made some good plays in the clutch to get us over the hump. I would have helped if I could have made some free throws in the end. This was a competitive basketball game. They [Indiana Pacers] are well coached. They are a good team.”

On the difference between the HEAT’s home vs. away record:
“Home court is really the story of the NBA playoffs. There are a couple of other teams that were 0-2 and came back when they went to their home court. I think it is obvious why someone may have an advantage at home. When you have 20,000 people chanting ‘Let’s Go HEAT’, it has a tendency to give you a little extra. It did tonight. We are grateful for the fans coming out like they did tonight. I also think that no matter how many five-star hotels you stay at, nothing is like your own bed, and no matter how many restaurants you go to, nothing is like Mama’s cooking.”

On the play of Jermaine O’Neal:
“He is a good player. He is tough in the paint. He is seven feet tall and makes things happen for them. It is good to see us win when he has a good scoring night.”

HEAT Forward Caron Butler

On the game:
“Tonight, we tried to continue to front them, and tried to always keep a body on them. We wanted to make it difficult for them. We have heard that people are writing us off, and we try to stay positive and work on the things we need to work on. That is what we did the last few days. We corrected some of our mistakes, and we did a good job defensively in tonight’s game. It was a very physical game. Guys were attacking the basket, but that is the league, and that is the playoffs, and that is how it is going to be played. We moved the ball a lot better in the second half. We believe in our offense.”

On the difference between the HEAT’s home vs. away record:
“I have said it time and time again, the difference is the fans. We feed off of them, and they feed off of us. It is great energy flowing through this building. We feel we cannot lose in this building.”

HEAT Guard Eddie Jones

On the game:
“We did a great job rebounding the basketball. We had to get our bench going. I just wanted to come out and be aggressive. I am not getting shots because I come off screens and find three guys covering me. When you have three guys covering me, I know that somebody has to be open. I am not going to force shots. If the shots are there, I will take them. If not, I will continue to pass the ball.”

On the play of Malik Allen:
“Tonight, Malik helped us out a lot. He has waited his turn. He did not play a lot against New Orleans, but he came out and gave us good minutes off the bench tonight.”

Pacers Head Coach Rick Carlisle

On the Game:
“I thought that Miami (HEAT) played a fine game. They played a real precise game. I mean including their bench. Malik Allen goes six-for-nine (field goals). Guys like (Udonis) Haslem and (Rasual) Butler go one-for-one in just four and three minutes, respectively. They just played with a high level of efficiency. That was the key to the game. Their main guys stepped up and played huge as well. They were just more inspired. We weren’t getting it done at either end. Offensively, we were sluggish, and defensively we gave up 47-percent shooting. It was a sound beating. The fact that we hit nine three-pointers again skews the score. It really wasn’t as close as the score. We’re going to have to play much better to beat this team here. I don’t think there’s any doubt about it. They’ve played extremely well and they deserve the credit.”

“We’re going to have to move the ball better against this team. I think we only had seven or eight assists in the first half. It’s not good enough for a team like ours that averaged 22 or 23 during the season. Our level of precision at both ends of the court is going to have to be much better.”

On being out-rebounded:
“They (the HEAT) have been quicker to the ball and sometimes we’ve been caught in rotation. I have to believe part of the problem is that we’re getting outworked. It’s something that we talked about in Game 1, and it’s been consistent. Because they’re a good driving team, often times if they beat you it will start a chain reaction and it’s harder to block-out and get rebounds. But if we’re going to be in a situation where we’re unable to do that, we’re going to put ourselves behind the eight ball time and time again against this team. Part of it may come down to things they’re doing that create the situations, but I just have to believe that we’re a team that can just stay even on the boards. I’ll have to look at the tape, I could be wrong. When you get out-rebounded by eight, that’s a pretty big number. It’s a number that’s a losing number.”

On Reggie Miller:
“Obviously what he did in the last game, they (the HEAT) were paying extra attention to him. Some of that is my blame. When you have a Hall of Fame player, you gotta get him some shots. We have to give Reggie the ball more. I don’t think you can take anything away from Miami’s effort in that area. Eddie Jones and the guys that were playing him did a much better job today than they did on Saturday.”

Pacers Forward Ron Artest

On losing tonight’s game:
“It’s alright. It happens. If you lose a game in the playoffs, then you just have to come back and win the next game.”

On the game:
“We weren’t making enough of our free-throws. We missed a lot of free-throws and I think that had a lot to do with it.”

“We played with great energy. We just didn’t play smart tonight.”

On the HEAT:
“They finally came to play.”

On Malik Allen’s performance:
“No, I wasn’t surprised. We know he’s capable of hitting big shots in the regular season or the playoffs.”

Pacers Guard Reggie Miller

“I did not have a lot of good looks. I give the HEAT a lot of credit. This is our first loss in the playoffs. We knew we were not going to go undefeated, and it was simply a matter of time, but we know we can play better. We have not played great in any of the games.”

“Both teams’ defenses have really stepped up. Obviously, in playoff basketball, you are lucky to throw 45 percent. When you get an opportunity, though, you need to make shots. When you get free throws, you need to make free throws. When you get easy opportunities, or lay-ups, or wide open shots, those are the ones you need to make.”

Pacers Forward/Center Jermaine O'Neal

“We just have to have more effort. I need to set the tone. If I am not being aggressive, it is like a virus. The HEAT just wanted it more than we wanted it tonight. We had a lot of breakdowns, and we did not have a sense of urgency tonight. We have to do a better job, and now the pressure is on us.”

“The combination of our bad defense and bad offense is why we lost the game tonight. Hopefully, we will learn from our mistakes so that we can get the next win.”

“I have been trying to be aggressive, but tonight maybe I was a little too aggressive. I forced some shots that I maybe should not have been taking. On the positive side, I am starting to feel comfortable again in the fourth quarter. That is the feeling I have been looking for in the first three games. I hope on Wednesday, I have that same feeling.”
