May 2, 2004 | New Orleans Arena | Miami HEAT - 83 | New Orleans Hornets - 89

HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy

“I thought the Hornets played great. They dominated the game on both ends of the floor. The only positive part for us we didn’t quit. We’ve been that way all year. We won’t quit or go away. That could’ve been a 25- or 30-point game. We got dominated today for 42 minutes.”

HEAT Center Brian Grant

About the play of the game:
“If we play our game we are going to be alright. I’m disappointed on the way we played for half of the game when they made that little run, but that is what the playoffs are all about. They took care of home court, and now we go back to Miami, and try to finish it up.”

About game 7:
“We have to play our game period. Talking and composure you have to try to keep that in tact. We have to play the game, regardless of talking. We have to play the game, and if we play I have confidence in this team at the end.”

HEAT Guard Rafer Alston

On not closing the series out:
“We are angry at ourselves that we didn’t play like we are capable, and we only played hard in spurts.”

On being down early and then coming back:
"Our guys fought back and that shows us that if we play like we did in the last 8 minutes and like we are capable we will be in the game."

On the physical style of play and Tractor Traylor:
“They tried to take us out of our game which is running and getting out and scoring on the break. He (Tractor Traylor) was in the game to bruise and battle but that seemed to work in our favor because we were able to cut into their lead when he was in the game."

About game 7:
“It will be real intense, a 48 minute game. We won’t be able to relax or take any plays off. We will be all right if we play our game, which is running and scoring on the break."

Hornets Head Coach Tim Floyd

“I felt like we had improved play from the 4 and 5 spots offensively. Baron (Davis) kind of set the stage by taking four shots in the first half. We really did get P.J. (Brown) involved and (Jamaal) Magloire. We’ve tried to do that all series long; the difference tonight was those guys made their looks when they had them.

“I thought we played great defensively in the first half. I’m a little disappointed we lost our poise in the third and fourth quarter as far as emotions. We’ve got to get that in check as the series continues.

On Brown’s performance vs. Lamar Odom:
“Lamar’s a terrific player and he’s put a lot of pressure on us the entire series. P.J. had a lot of help tonight from a couple of guys that were hugging that lane for him. The biggest thing we did was get back and not give him those open-floor opportunities at the top of the key, where he’s so deadly.

On Wesley’s fourth quarter:
“That was after sitting 10 minutes. He came in and hit that first open look, and then we ran a couple of actions and got it in his hands. Most importantly, he’s got the toughest (defensive) assignment of anybody, chasing Eddie Jones, and he still had the energy to step up and make those shots.”

On Game 7:
“I think most Game 7’s come down to the last 2 minutes. Whoever can get the ball to the rim late, and early to set the stage for what happens late. Also, defensive rebounding and poise (will be keys)."

Hornets Forward/Center Robert Traylor

On the intensity of the game:
“It was a do or die game for us. That’s the way their fans were in Game 5 and that’s the way we needed our fans to be tonight…to just come out and be real rowdy and raucous. That’s the way that we have to play this series. We got to be tough, walk in and play hard basketball.”

On if this game had the feel of a game 7:
“It’s playoff basketball. It was a two game series, one game for us. We really needed this game. We wanted to come out, set the tone early and get after it.”

Hornets Forward P. J. Brown

On the importance of winning today:
“I definitely think the stakes were raised today in an elimination game and backs against the wall. For us to extend our season we had to give everything that we had and just leave it out on the floor. I thought everybody that played gave everything they had. It was just a very intense game.”

On trash talking between the teams:
“The ante was definitely raised. There was a lot of trash talking going on. Chit chat, I call it playoff chit-chat. That’s just part of it. It’s nothing personal. It’s just all business. When I was back in Miami (playing), we had some spirited battles like that with the Knicks. It was nothing for me to play like that and talk like that (today).”

On needing to win on the road:
“We have to get one. We feel comfortable and confident that we can get the job done. We gave away game 1. We gave away game 5. Coming down the stretch, we didn’t take care of the ball and play smart down there. Hopefully, we learned our lesson. Hopefully, this fourth time will be the charm for us.”

Hornets Guard Baron Davis

On composure:
“Composure is everything, especially in this series. The team that’s been able to get stops down at the end and execute their offense, and hit big shots, has been the team to win….Going down to Miami this last time, we plan on doing everything right. We have yet to play our best game for 48 minutes and hope that it happens Tuesday night.”

On his play:
“I have to remain poised and have a good floor game. The only thing we have to do is not turn the ball over. As long as we continue to get shots and offensive rebounds, we are a real good team, but we have to limit our turnovers and get a good shot each time.”

Hornets Guard David Wesley

On the physical play today:
“I said that after Game 1 whoever walks out of this series would be a big bruise.”

On Game 7:
“We have to get a win-ugly, pretty, from outside, from inside.”

On only 2 officials:
“With 2 officials, the league should think about a standby ref, especially in the playoffs, because games get so heated. There are so many blind spots for cheap shots and games can get out of hand.”

Hornets Forward George Lynch

On increased emotion in this game:
“It’s playoff basketball. During the regular season, I sit back and try to fit in where guys can be themselves and I just do my role and be happy with that. The game is on the line now. We’re going down there for game 7. The last two times we didn’t finish in the fourth quarter. I just need to make sure that if it’s up to me to set the tone in the beginning of the game then I need to be there for our team to get involved.”
