April 30, 2004 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 87 | New Orleans Hornets - 83
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the game:
“We were very frustrated early in the game and we were very frustrated in the third quarter. We did what we always do, we just hung around. Our guys battled and stayed in the game and were able to make enough plays. I thought offensively we could not get any transition going, but we were much better in the half court. Even in the first quarter when we were missing like crazy we were getting much better looks at the basket. I thought we were pretty aggressive attacking the basket. I was happy in terms of half court offensive. We missed too many free throws and we struggled like crazy to get a rebound. That has been a major problem for us in the fourth quarter. Part of the problem is we are out there trapping on the pick-and-role to get a big guy out near half court and we are out numbered on the boards. Part of it is we just got to do a better job of running the ball down.”
“We held them to 35 percent shooting and our guys battled like crazy. It’s a great win.”
On the first half:
“I thought that at the start of the game, the first six minutes, we were sharp as heck. I thought we were moving the ball, getting great shots. We missed a couple lay ups, we missed some wide-open jumpers. I was really really happy with the way we started the game, but then I think what happened is that we missed so many shots that frustration set in. Then I didn’t think we moved on the ball and we forced some shoots. That’s the problem we have been having in this series. When shoots aren’t dropping guys start taking too much on themselves instead of continuing to play the game. We had four turnovers in the first half, we did a pretty good job of protecting the ball. That kept us close enough to make a run.”
On Dwyane Wade’s three-point shoot at the end of the fourth quarter:
“It was a unbelievable shoot. He took it on balance. I think Dwayne has potential to be a very good shooter.”
HEAT Forward Caron Butler
On the game:
“Game three was much more physical than this game, but this one was close to it. Dwyane [Wade] hit a big time shot at the end of the game. We all stepped up. We hit some big free throws at the end of this one. We want to win all the games. We had to win tonight to get the opportunity to go to New Orleans to close out this series. We have some momentum going and feel good about the challenge. We have a lot of confidence in ourselves and in this team. Whenever we are down at home, we feel we can come back and win the game. The fans stay loud and stay into the game. They won’t let us lose here. Somehow, someway, we just find a way to win. We need to continue to hit the boards on Sunday and we should be fine.”
On Dwyane Wade’s last three-point shot of the game:
“He hit a big time three. They [New Orleans Hornets] were trying to get a body on him. He was really aware of the shot clock and knocked down the three. That was a big shot for us.”
On Rafer Alston’s ejection:
“That got the crowd hyped, and it got us hyped. He did a good job of keeping his composure and just walking off the court. He is a good leader. He is a General out there on the court.”
HEAT Center Brian Grant
On the game:
“They kept getting offensive rebounds. Baron Davis has been a problem for us the past few games. Fortunately, we were able to win tonight, but we have to find a better way of cooling him down a little bit more. This was pretty physical. It was pretty emotional. I think both teams are full of good guys with good character, but both teams are playing for something right now. You may see some guys act out of character and do things they would not normally do. It is not over yet, so you may see some more out of characteristic behavior. Sunday is going to be an intense and physical game. When that ball goes up, it is going to be nothing less than a basketball battle. We are fighting to close out the series. This is the only real playoff series thus far. There has not been a series this year where you have seen two teams battling it out like in this series. Most of the series have been 3-1 or 4-0. This one has been really close.”
HEAT Forward Udonis Haslem
On the game:
“Coach Van Gundy told us in the beginning of the fourth quarter that this is why we play basketball. He told us that if we did not love this moment, then we do not deserve to play basketball. We had to lay it on the line right there and we did. We were fortunate enough to come out with the victory. My job is to go out there and play basketball. I play hard and help my team win. I don’t get into all of the other stuff.”
HEAT Forward Lamar Odom
On the game:
“It was a tough game. I am tired. They [New Orleans Hornets] just keep crashing the boards on us. That is their best offense. We have been in close games all year. It looks like it is paying off. To see all of the fans dressed in black going crazy also helps us. When you hear 21,000 people going crazy for a play you just made or your teammate just made, it just feels great. Now, we need to be bigger on Sunday than we were tonight. We want to beat them on their home floor. We want to be the first team in this series to win on the opponent’s home floor. It has been hard for the road team to get a victory. This game was different than all of the previous games. The first game was intense, but this game was just different.”
On Dwyane Wade’s last three-point shot of the game:
“I was going to shoot the ball. Then I saw number three with his hands up in the air. I saw Baron Davis and David Wesley sitting in the lane. I just threw the ball over them. Dwyane barely had it in his hands. That is two big shots for him at home, two big game winners. It really wasn’t the game winning shot, but he pretty much broke the backs of those guys [New Orleans Hornets]. I looked up at the shot clock and saw that there was three seconds on it. I have pretty strong wrists, so it took me less than half a second to get it across the court. The ball moves fastest when you pass it. I just tried to get it to Dwyane and to see it splash down was big time. It looked good going out of his hands. Dwyane is an NBA player. If an NBA basketball player has a wide-open shot, then I am going to give it to him and he is going to drill it. He knew it was going in when it left his hands.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the HEAT’s composure:
“There is no reason why we shouldn’t be composed on our home floor. We’ve been doing it all season long at home. Even though they [New Orleans Hornets] lead most of the game, we still were confident that we could come back. I came out looking not only to score, but also to make plays. I feel that I didn’t do it the last two games. I think our team needs me to be a playmaker, and tonight, I was not going to let them down.”
On his last three-point shot of the game:
“I love being in those moments. Of course, you would love to blow out a team, but that doesn’t happen too often in the playoffs. Lamar [Odom] found me in the corner. When the ball was in the air, I was smiling inside. I love that the guys were looking for me at that point of the game.”
Hornets Head Coach Tim Floyd
On the Hornets:
“I think our guys are playing really hard, but we had a quality opponent. In Game Two, we were coming off a tough loss, and got down, but our guys played really hard in New Orleans, and they played hard tonight.”
On the game:
“We just let some opportunities get away from us, but the HEAT also created a lot of their own opportunities by forcing turnovers. We turned it over 18 times for 20 points.”
On the HEAT:
“[Dwyane] Wade, [Lamar] Odom, and [Eddie] Jones each knocked down a big three in the fourth quarter. We did not get a good start in the fourth quarter. We had a five point lead, and had an opportunity to lay it up, but we turned it over on the first possession. They [the HEAT] then went on a 6-0 run, and we never recovered."
Hornets Forward P. J. Brown
On Baron Davis’ performance:
“A tremendous performance. [The HEAT] did everything they could to take him out of the game, but great players still find a way to get it done. They through everything at him, but he was determined. That’s the biggest reason why this loss is so disappointing. We wanted to win it for him. He laid it on the line for us tonight, and played, probably, his best game of the year.”
On the game:
“We had the game in our hands. All we had to do keep playing the game like we had the first three quarters, but we just couldn’t do it.”
On the physical play by both teams:
“That’s just playoff basketball. That’s the way it is, and that’s the way it’s going to be on Sunday. That’s just the way it is. It’s nothing personal. It’s all business, and we expect more of the same on Sunday.”
Hornets Guard Darrell Armstrong
On the series:
“This series is, basically, even. We’ve just got to make sure that we take care of our home court advantage when we go back on Sunday.”
On the final minutes of the game:
“It seemed that when I missed that three-pointer, [the HEAT] had the game under control after that.”
