April 9, 2004 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 106 | Cleveland Cavaliers - 91
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the game:
“It was our typical game of late…slow start, good second quarter, awful third quarter, and great fourth quarter. We are going to need a much more consistent effort at the defensive end throughout the game, but it is great to see our poise and our resolve down the stretch.”
“They [the HEAT] are looking forward to the playoffs, but we need to keep pushing. When you let go and relax, it is hard to get it back. It is much easier to hang on to it.”
On the being over .500:
“It feels great. It has been a long time. And to come from where we did, these guys [the HEAT] deserve a tremendous amount of credit. The way they are doing it is great, too. It is exciting, and they are fun to watch. But I wish they could play a little more defense, and I could have as much fun watching them as some of the fans.”
On the HEAT fans:
“Our fans have been fabulous. That arena was clearly ours. Down the stretch, there was no one cheering [LeBron James].”
On LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers:
“There is only so much you can do with a guy [LeBron James] who is that big and that talented. He is going to get some shots, but we [the HEAT] played him better than we played him last game. At least we limited the number of attempts he got, but he [LeBron James] is a hell of a player. That team [the Cavaliers] is really, really talented."
HEAT Center Brian Grant
On the game:
“It just feels great to be winning. It doesn’t really matter how it happens. I was happy that I was able to contribute more tonight on the offensive end. We go in at the half with a four-point lead and we came out a little lackadaisical but we were able to get it back. We are still going after the fourth position. We need to take care of business on our end by winning.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the game:
“It was just a team effort. I was just trying to make plays happen. In the fourth quarter my team looked to me and I started attacking. Once I attacked it opened up shots for guys who then opened up holes for me.”

HEAT Forward Lamar Odom
On the game:
“We are having a lot of fun right now. We are trying to work on getting better. Going into the playoffs you want to play your best basketball.”
HEAT Guard Eddie Jones
On the game:
“People came to see LeBron James, but we showed them what our team is about. They’re going to keep coming.”
“When I’m open I’m going to shoot the ball. I’ve been like that all year and I’m going to continue to do that. We know what’s at stake. We are vying for the fourth spot and we have to continue to go out and try our best to get wins. We have to look at this game and bring the fourth quarter effort the whole game tomorrow night.”
Cavaliers Head Coach Paul Silas
On the playoffs:
“Yep. It’s over.”
On the game:
I’m not disappointed because I know the reason why we lost. If we had a full team I’d be disappointed. When you play short-handed it’s inevitable that’s going to happen. I’m not happy, but tomorrow’s another day and we have to play again. I don’t see any changes to make. We didn’t have enough firepower tonight.”
On the third quarter:
“In the third they just put more pressure on us defensively. They took us off the dribble and we couldn’t recover. We had open looks and we just missed. It just brings you down. ”
Cavaliers Forward Ira Newble
On the game:
“Tonight’s game was intense. We basically needed to win to keep our slim hopes alive. We wanted to come out and play hard. Tomorrow’s game is about pride. We want to go out there and make a statement. We want to go out there and win that game.”
On the slimming of their playoff hopes:
“We have to be positive. We turned it around from last year. We won over 30 games this year, while last year’s team won only 17. That is a good improvement. We proved something to the coaches and we are ready to come back strong next season and be in the playoffs, not fighting to get into them. I believe we will be in the playoffs next year, and we won’t be fighting for the eighth seed.”
Cavaliers Forward Lee Nailon
On the game:
“We wanted to win this game. Unfortunately, that did not happen. They beat us in the transition game. We held our ground in the half court set. If we had done a better job defensively against their transition game, we would have had a better chance of winning this game.”
On their season:
“We won a lot more games than last year, and that is a good thing. We have been playing each game lately like it was our last game. Next season we need to come back with the same attitude about winning and playing together as we had this year. We still want to continue to play hard in these last few games. You want to impress the coaches and show them you still have pride. Just because you are not in the playoffs, you still have plenty to play for in the NBA.”
Cavaliers Guard LeBron James
On the game:
“I can get the ball inside anytime I want to. There are not too many people that can stop me from getting the ball. I am not a loser and I will never be a loser, but this loss is hard. I know that everyone is out there playing hard. Not being able to win knowing that is very frustrating. Tonight, they just had more firepower than us.”
On their season:
“This season has been like a roller coaster for us. It has been up and down all year. We have been through the good, and we have been through the bad. I feel we have succeeded in going out and playing the game of basketball. We had three different teams this year. We finally got our team right and we then lost our quarterback [Jeff McInnis]. That really hurt us. We should be fine next year.”
On the play of Dwyane Wade:
“Every time I mention Carmelo [Anthony] I mention Dwyane [Wade] as well. He has had a great season. He has produced well and really helped this team get to the playoffs. He is a really great player.”
